Mackie DL1608 in the house!

Mackie support said if the firmware does not match the master fader app version the unit will not function. She could not explain why it worked Thursday night but not Friday. The was no update issued between Thursday and Friday. Of course, she said this had never occurred before. That is something I have heard from various tech supports on numerous occasions so pardon many skepticism.

The only thing she could offer was a force update procedure if it happened again. Turn off the mixer and undock the ipad. There is a recessed button next the the power cable. Hold it in and turn on the mixer. Release the recessed button after about 3 seconds and dock the ipad. This will cause the mixer to update the firmware from the master fader app on the ipad and allow them to work together. Any ipad on a different version will not work. It takes about 15 minutes.

Wish me luck I just took the plunge and will have the unit on WED. Now I need an Ipad.

Any of you have anything to add to this thread?

I was thinking of using it mono and sending one side to the subs with only bass and kick and running the tops full range but crossing them over like 80 or 90
( I have double 15 tops). I can put the kick and bass dead center in stereo and pan vocals, guitar and drum over heads to the other side.

Yes to bass & kick in the tops—otherwise they'll just be lost in the mud.

Put both instruments in both the sub feed and in whatever mix you use to feed the tops (probably the main mix, although you might prefer to save the main mix for a use that benefits from stereo). For example, you might set the board's main mix as a live-to-two-track mix; for that, you won't want the same mix that feeds the FOH. You might also use the mains to feed a stereo IEM mix.

As for raising the system volume, unless you're running a silent stage you'll still want to re-balance subs and tops by listening to the room mix.

I used it for the first time a couple weeks ago. It worked great.

As a result we are selling our amp and passive EV monitor wedges and getting some more small 10 inch powered monitors.

I highly recommend the new Airport Express as the router - and definitely have a second IPad for crowd mixing. (if you have them already - I wouldn't buy a second one). Phone app worked well for our drummer.

I'll personally be going mono IEM for the time being. Everything appears to be working great. We were trying to hold off for the X32 compact, but the Mackie killed it for us. We've been through box mixers, a 1604 Mackie - and this is the best yet. Easy to have a sound guy when all they have to adjust is the mains and we are handling the monitor mixes.

Our pedal steel guy was very skeptical but now he's on board.

My DL1608 came last week and i used it at gigs this past weekend and I couldn't be happier. Was incredibly easy to create a profile for my band before the first show and just tweak it at the gig the first night. Next gig, I just recalled everything and eq'd according to the room. Getting out in front of the stage with the ipad to set levels was a godsend. I also have the presonus Studiolive 16.4.2 which I love as well.. I just wish it were more portable like the mackie. If the Presonus didn't need a laptop or mac mini to connect to it, and could accept a portable hard drive for storage of 16 track recording, and it were slightly smaller, it would be the perfect mixer.... or if the mackie did 16 track audio recording... Basically combining the best attributes of both systems.. I certainly see the Mackie getting the bulk of my gigs though.

Wanted to report that I used the right out to the subs and the left full to the tops over the weekend with my 1608. It was great, I put kick, bass and keys in the sub. I have 2 QSC K12 Subs and they were center of stage lying down on rubber matts. Wow was the system clean and the kick was like thunder and bass guitar was very present in the mix, in fact the system was almost to bright even though I have the FOH graphic flat with a dip at 3k.. Thanks all.
