Mackie DL1608 in the house!

Did an outdoor gig yesterday with the Dl1608 and my ipad overheated. The ipad stopped working and said that it needed to be cooled down before it would work again. Removed the ipad and put it in the shade and used my iphone to mix in a pinch. The unit continued to work like a champ. Never a dropout
 
was the ipad located in open sunlight, or a shaded area? I used mine yesterday at an outdoor show that was 85+ degrees and very humid, and didn't have a hiccup over 4 hours from 10am-2pm. But it was in the shade, not direct sunlight. Just curious...
 
riddle me this: from my initial cursory look at these, apparently you can't put compression on a channel without having that compression also show up in the auxes, too; is that right?

if so, this thing is a non-starter!

compression in monitors is a big no-no.
 
I agree that compression in stage monitors is a bug-a-boo, but for me this hasn't presented a functional problem.

The key is to use the compression judiciously. I'm not doing high profile, high volume, high tech gigs with the 1608, so in the context of how I use it (and I'm assuming others use it) - as a small venue mixer - having a touch of compression on the vocal monitor wedges is not a terrible thing. If you need to protect against overly aggressive vocalists who scream without regard to "proper vocal technique", then that's another issue altogether, but of course then we're talking about limiting and not a fairly subtle levelling compression.

So, I agree with you, walterw, but in application, I'm not bothered by it too much.

And, FWIW, with 6 auxes you can do some clever routing with the vocal channels to create a vocal sub mix: vocal input channels without compression, and pre-channel fader to feed the monitor sends. Then, feed an available aux send (pre-ch. fader) with the vocals, and return it into an open channel on the main mix (be careful not to create a feedback loop), and whack this makeshift "vocal submix" as hard as you want, using its respective Aux feed as the means to control individual vocal levels in the mains. Yes, a bit of a workaround, but certainly do-able if you want to spend a little time sorting it out.
 
Personally, I'm hoping that the iPad mixer app eventually will have a couple of "always available" buttons: one as a mute kill switch to mute everything to solve a runaway feedback or any other mystery that could arise (soundcheck, etc.), and another that is an FX killswitch. Even better would be to allow the use of a BlueTooth enabled dual footswitch that could be assigned to either of these switches (such as this device: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] )

Agreed, the mute function is critical. I've emailed Mackie about it a few times now. IMHO it's a critical flaw in their current version.

For certain. I'm no rookie to live mixing and mixing from the stage, and NOT having an immediately available killswitch keeps me constantly on edge, and it is really distracting.

Another option to this would be to have stored scenes available on the main mix screen, so at least that way, you could program a "killswitch" of your own and have it at the ready. For me, it is about the lack of immediate access to a global mute mechanism of some kind...any kind...that bugs me.
 
I think the entire channel should turn red or another color if it is muted - so you can accidentally tell. Not just a box too.

Either way nifty technology at it's price point - and I'm sure we'll look at this rig in ten years and go wow - that was whatever.

For an entry level board into mono IEM - it's awesome for my band. Absolutely great.

run a 1/4" TRS to XLR jumper cable from say aux 5 out to an open "vocal group" channel;

compress that channel, and send it on out to the mains!

i guess you'd have to then use the aux 5 mixer screen as a "vocals layer" to control individual levels, right?

the idea of having to go through a whole 'nother round of D-A then A-D conversion for the all-important vocals doesn't thrill me, though.

Yes, walterw, I believe you have the general idea. Here's a more specific example for those who might be interested that want to follow along:

3 vocal mics, with 3 vocal monitor mixes (1 for each vocalist, Aux 1, 2, 3), and the "ghetto" vocal submix (aux 5) being "returned" to input channel 16:

Main inputs, faders all the way down:

Ch1 vocal: uncompressed (send to Aux 1 monitor mix, and Aux 5 submix, both pre fader)
Ch2 vocal: uncompressed (send to Aux 2 monitor mix, and Aux 5 submix, both pre fader)
Ch3 vocal: uncompressed (send to Aux 3 monitor mix, and Aux 5 submix, both pre fader)

- Aux 1,2,3 monitor feeds operate as typical

- Aux 5 (vox submix): set nominal output levels for all 3 vocal channels, and run a physical connection from Aux5 out to Channel 16 input (or any channel you want) using a 1/4" to 1/4" cable. [note: make sure that Ch16 is not feeding any signal to Aux5 as this would create a nasty feedback loop!!!] Compress/EQ ch 16 to taste and use its fader to feed the main output mix. Aux 5 can be used for "active mixing" of the individual vocal channels if needed, rather than "set and forget". This allows you to have uncompressed vocal channels for stage monitor wedges, but allows compression of vocals to the main output for FOH.

Now a couple of nuances and caveats to this:

Yes, there is an added layer of D/A A/D conversion, but I'm of the thinking that this technology has progressed to the point where it is moot for most general live sound applications.

The Reverb and Delay auxes do NOT have the ability to switch to PRE fader (IIRC). Thus, if you want echo or reverb on the vocals, you'll have to apply them globally to the vocal submix channel return (ch 16 in my example). Depending on your needs, this may or may not matter for much.

An interesting technique that can be used as an alternative to Aux 5 "active mixing" of the vocal channels is this: use the uncompressed vocal channels 1,2,3 (on the Main screen) to actively mix vocal levels (if for example, all 3 vocalists take turns singing lead). Set the "submix" channel 16 to provide a "nominal" level for all of the vocalists, but then bump the lead vocalist's INPUT CHANNEL FADER (1,2 or 3) as needed to provide the extra vocal to punch them to the front of the vocal mix. (The assumption has to be made that the vocalists are not wildly out of control, screaming, or doing other nasty things that cause problems with dynamics - IOW, they use proper vocal mic technique). With this technique, you get some of the clarity and articulation of the non-compressed vocal channel, but with the benefits of compression provided by the submix ch 16. [note: depending on latency, this may result in phase cancellation between ch1,2,3 and Ch16, due to the physical routing of aux5 output to Ch16 input. I've not tested this to see if it is an issue or not. ]

The above can also solve the dilemma of providing appropriate SEND levels to the Reverb/Delay aux feeds. If, for example, Vocal CH1 is the lead for a song, and you bump up that channel fader +5db, this will provide enough "post fader" gain to feed the delay or reverb. Again, the ch 16 "submix" can be used for a nominal amount of overall vocal Reverb, while the echo for lead vocals can be provided by bumping up the individual Ch 1,2 or 3 faders.

Apologies for the long post. This can be a little complicated and convoluted, but in theory should work. Just take your time and be careful with each step...adjust faders slowly initially. Hope you find it interesting to experiment with!
 
My band uses two sets of mains - 1 is a pair of passive 15 JBLs that are just for vocals. The other two sets are the 2 speaker and a horn tower JBL speakers that a lot of people hate but I like them for our purpose. We just use them for instruments only.

So the vocal sits on top of the instrument output. We do vocals in the mains only - and then do a mono instrument mix in Aux 1. We could do a split panned version of this setup to get it all on the same "screen" of one of the outputs - but we EQ the speaks a little differently.

It works well. I would be cautious trying to do a funky submix involving the auxes and channel inputs personally. That's just me though. Try it out.
 
correct. cautious. anyone who tries something funky like this who doesn't fully understand what is being done, why it is being done, and moves too quickly without exercising caution is def asking for trouble.

Really the only thing remotely harmful with the above technique is creating a loop with the submix channel feeding back into the aux send which is feeding it...so just check it before proceeding. Anyone with experience using an aux send to feed outboard effects, and returning the FX to a channel strip, has to use the same caution. This is a fairly common, old school technique.
