Mackie DL1608 in the house!

...the wi-fi kept failing! i would see solid bars of the wi-fi icon on our various igadgets, but they would be unable to sync up to the mixer; the "devices" page would show "no available devices" even though the router was up and running.

turning things off then back on would sporadically fix the problem, but this issue was annoying all night. i don't know that it's not a problem with our router or the cat 5 cable, though.
i brought this issue up to alpha's digital sound expert, and he related a similar problem with his presonus/laptop/ipad setup at a gig; he was thrown for a loop until he discovered that two band members had broken out new line 6 relay digital wireless units that night!

he bumped his router from 2.4GHz where the line 6 relay lives up to 5GHz, and was fine after that.

i use a G50 myself, and that could very well have been causing a conflict! (unfortunately the router we got is only 2.4GHz, as the idea is to use individual iphones to tweak monitors, and we all have the 4S instead of the 5.)

next time i'll try different channels on my G50, and i'll see if just having my transmitter off helps with the device connectivity.

Something that I also believe is missing is a jack for a 2 button footswitch to bypass echo and reverb (Sends) - or - as an alternative, bypass echo and set delay time via tap tempo (instead of bypassing reverb). Obviously, this is a physical addition to the hardware, so not holding my breath on that one.
They could actually do that via one of the bluetooth pedals available :).

there's no reason you should have gotten more feedback just because the input signals were stronger, unless they were actually full-on clipping the inputs.

get the inputs nice and strong, then bring up the channels and outputs as needed.

I've got my input trims on vocal mics set around noon, and that gets the channel levels into the yellow for me (SM58 or Audix OM6) without any troubles.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. We're using 58s and a couple of 57s for sax and flute. To get full green the gain knobs are at 3 oclock or so and the mics are extremely hot. They pick up the kick.

There seems to be a spot between 12 and 1 on the gain knobs that goes from weak signal to good.

that's a different problem, your sax and flute are not giving you a strong enough sound in the first place; remember,
"loudest sound at the mic wins", whether it's a quiet flute up close or a loud kick drum further away.

get them closer, aim the mic so it's not pointed so much at the drums, and high pass that puppy pretty hard, like above 100Hz; saxes and especially flutes don't have anything down there, so all you're doing otherwise is leaving the mic open for lows from the kick.

try leaving the EQ flat, but sliding the high pass up and up, until you actually hear the sax or flute start to get thinner-sounding. that's your stopping point, maybe drop it back a little.

a bit of boost higher up will also help these wind instruments jump out a little.

I appreciate it, but it's not the sax and flute mics exclusively causing the problem. When troubleshooting the feedback I soloed each mic. They were all super hot. All the mics are high passed around 100 or so but off the top of my head I can't remember exactly.

Alas, no :( .

Ayyyy....there's the rub. Mackie should look into some form of implementation of alternate external control of functions (typically, via MIDI). Exposing this stuff would allow for 3rd party hardware controllers and sequencer automation, making it much more versatile and appealing for "knobs and faders" users. Would open up a whole new world of functionality.

Oh well...I still like the Mackie for my relatively limited applications...but now GAS'ing hard...Soundcraft SiExp16, A&H qu-16, Behringer X32Compact, all at the $2500US price point....***!!!?? Things are getting scary good with these small format digi mixers.

mackie's facebook page is teasing us with images of channel and aux faders that are controlling two channels at once for stereo ins or outs;

the big one for me is a "pre fader" button (with the little arrow meaning multiple choices) over an aux fader, which i'm taking to mean an option for removing the compression and/or the EQs from that aux, a game-changer for legit live sound with this thing.

You're getting your wish.......... They just previewed a "pre-DSP" button on Facebook!!!!

hot diggity!

that's another option on the "pre-fader" button i saw before; i'm guessing this button replaces the "pre-post" buttons over the aux master faders.

i also see "use LR mute" as another option on that menu, which means 1: LR mute! and 2: the option to mute whatever vocal monitors at the same time. there's our mackie "break switch"!

we've seen the "link" thing for working two channels with one fader; if they allow us to ditch the stupid 31-band graphics for the lovely parametrics on outputs, we'll have a grand slam home run.

I've been holding off on purchasing one of these until they ship with the lightning connecter, or at least some way to retrofit a lighting connector so that I don't have to use an adaptor from the 30-pin.

I've heard some rumors, but does anyone have a well-educated guess about when that might begin to ship?

-Alan

they're hinting at a new lightning connecter version, but they also showed a video of an ipad 4 with the adapter fitting right into the top of the current mixer and working, just offset an inch or so. (you have to lift up the adapter a little to get it to click in, but it works.)

i myself discovered i didn't like sliding my ipad in and out of the mixer (worried about scratching it), and i hated carrying around a "naked" ipad in a bar! i ordered a 30-pin extension cable, so i can leave my ipad in a proper case and just plug into the mixer via the cable when needed.

as such, a lightning-to-30 pin cable should fit the bill the same way.

Love the new Soundcraft Si Expression 1, add the 16 channel digig snake for less than $2K, now you have a rackmount 32 channel console with Soundcraft quality, Lexicon verbs, a very nice way to go. The QU-16 is a 16 and looks to stay a 16. While early reviews are generally positive on the X32, they might look like a Midas, but they don't really have that...sound A&H and Soundcraft do. Not saying you can't get a great sound from the X32, but it is just not a Midas. And as a rule of thumb, if you can't afford a Midas you buy a Soundcraft or an A&H. So depending on future needs , the QU16 will be a winner for non expandable mixers. I had one in my shop for a week recently and just had a ball.

Oddly, I still like the sound I get from a Presonus over the A&H QU16 and the Presonus iPad app is the original. The Qu sounds great, but it's not a GLD or iLive sonically. But I'm creating a 64 ch house desk with a SI Expression 32 and a couple digital snakes for a client. They are a breeze to run, and their iPad App is just rock solid. The iPad app is strictly Volumes and GEQ's. The short coming is they only have one expansion port because I'd like to use the digi snakes and also use Dante to send from FOH to several new Symetrix Radius DSP's for speaker processing.

wait, i looked at that wrong; it's "use LR mute" on each channel; any kind of master mute (with a "use master mute" option on that aux menu) is something different, and i don't see that yet :hmm:
