Mackie DL1608 in the house!

Seems I've nearly always done sound in my bands, must be a bass player thing. Anyway last weekend I was hired to do sound and lights for a 5 piece band at Providence College in RI. They estimated about 600 seniors were there. This is the first time I've been able to mix and not play. The DL1608 worked fine. I left it docked and used an ipad mini to mix. I just realized how far away I was at times as I walked the entire place over and over again and never a blip. I had a lot of fun and just to show how things never chance, the gtr player in this band was to loud. During the first song the female singer ran out to me in front (she wasn't singing) and said the gtr was way to loud. I showed her that I had the fader off and shrugged. She agreed and never said another word. Ha never fails.

here's what i got, a whole bagful for like $6 to my door, enough for several mixers.

pull the knob off, stuff two o-rings onto the shaft, push the knob back on. (the shafts are D-shaped, so take care to orient the knob properly before pushing it back on.)

now they stay put, a really big deal for me since my ipad stays in a leather case that gets laid on top of the mixer and plugged in with my 2' extender cable; before it was far too easy to bump the bottom row of knobs and promptly turn 4 or 5 channels way up or way down :eek:

ha! yeah, i think it is; the drummer can't hear anything and can't step out front, and guitar players and singers only pay attention to themselves :p

it's us bass players who learn to really listen to the entire band.

OK, a couple more gigs with the post V2.0 mackie and the "trick" of making sure the ipad is at 100% charge to start out with and i can say that all the issues i was having before seem to have disappeared!

it synced perfectly through the 2' cablejive dock extender cable, jumped onto the wireless immediately when i unplugged it, and kept things charged so that the ipad was still at like 97% charge at the end of the night.

the other thing i figured out was to click the ipad off between sets straight from the master fader screen; this lets it cool off, speeds up recharging, and when clicked back on it goes right back to master fader and doesn't lose the wifi connection.

i'm loving this thing more and more, to where i look at the presonus, A-H and now the new behringer X32 digital boards we have at alpha, i look at the boards full of plastic knobs and sliders and wonder why i would want any of that on a digital mixer!

yay! (just saw this myself last night)

like i posted in the mackie forum, "as god is my witness i'll never look at those graphic EQs again!"

this means among other things it'll be easier to set up tops+subs using an aux as a sub out; just slide the high-pass up on the LR out and slide the low-pass down on the sub aux until they arrive at the same number in the display; (i don't know what the slope of those filters is, though.)

I've just been using the GEQs to "fake" a crossover but this will work MUCH better :) . If you look carefully at the video you will see a "18db/octave" on the buttons next to the HPF and LPF enable which implies they are selectable slope and at least that much :D ? 18 db/octave is what the present HPFs are on the channel strips. I sure hope they carry the new LPFs into the channel strips and the variable slopes. The new QSC "clone" just announced has LPF's on the channel strips - a real pro feature great for taming cymbal splash into the tom mics etc. The DL1608 is really morphing into a nice piece of kit!

just watched it again; freeze video @ 1:06 and we see a menu for slopes from 6dB to 24dB/octave, and the option appears available for both the high and low-pass filters!

also, the new alignment delay slider (which is on the output comp page) has a second slider for temperature? how does that work?

i understand how temp can affect the speed of sound and thus the alignment delay time, but what is it adjusting and how does it know what the temperature is?

Just got mine up and running last night. 6 piece modern country band. Everyone except the drummer has an iphone. They all want to control their own monitor mix (everyone has a powered wedge). What I am wondering is if there is a way to set each phone to control only a specific aux...I see you can lock out certain FOH/Aux's for wireless access, but is this an all or none feature?

I just don't want Bobby Joe accidentally turning down Daisy Lou's vocals in Daisy Lou's monitor mix...see? :D

yep, set up each iphone to only show the relevant aux and the relevant channels on that aux;

if you wanna be a d**k about it you can enter a passcode on each guy's iphone while you set up their monitor control so that they can't change it afterwords :cool:

I can see it being a disaster letting band members use their iphones with the my fader program. One guy last night tried to change his aux mix but pushed someone else's since the letters are so small on the iphone. Imagine that at a show? My plan...let them do that during soundcheck and then unplug the router once we start the show.

Also, using my cheap backup router, at home it was fine, but once 5 iphones + ipad were all attached it kept dropping. One time the only way to reconnect the ipad in the dock was to actually power cycle the board itself (popping powered speakers). Not too bad of a pop, but not something I would like to do in front of an audience. I ordered an Airport Express today.

TRS cables (as the manual says) are important for the aux outs.

Once more practice before our first show with the DL1608 (6 piece modern country band which includes 6 vocals, 2 electric guitars, mandolin, acoustic, 4 mic'd drums, and bass). Next we are going to test mic'ing the drums.

Really...the lack of an "analog" panic mute is the biggest feature missing as when the ipad lost the connection, there was no control (I would have to zero out all of the gain knobs). And...hopefully the next update lets you lock down the aux mixes by device from the Master Fader instead of having to password protect each individual device.

...and that's why you limit each copy of MyFader to the one aux they are using. Also I've only let someone control their IEM mix - no way is anyone getting control of their wedge mix unless massive feedback is a part of your show? ;)

Okay...first gig down. Got there pretty early and worked on the drums. I had them set up killer. Was out front with the iPad...it was only a 4 piece kit, and I set them eq'd-sounded like an arena rock god.

Get on stage and plug the iPad back in to the dock. What? No levels? Then some weird glitch where the show was not loaded. Oh oh...hit the show and the snapshot wasn't saved (reverted back to what I had set up from practice). A bit of feedback...panic button in action (power cycle).

So, after that, I found that when you go out of the app to play music and then go back in, it doesn't always re-sync. At the end of the first set, I put music on and then went back to the app and nothing. After a song ended, I power cycled again and it came back. I didn't play music on the next break.

Crystal clear monitors.....sounded great on stage. I really think a second iPad is the way to go though...keep one docked always. BTW, I did use an Apple airport express.

I will chalk some of it up as a rookie (haven't done sound in a about a year and this is for a 6 piece band with multiple instruments and 5 monitor mixes). Overall though...it was good (audience said it sounded great) and it will be that much easier now that I was able to get the FOH set up.

One weird thing is that levels are now more of a 2 step process...you have to make sure the gain controls are set (they get moved in transport or of course people use different amps/change the gain on their instruments/mics). Then part 2 is making sure the faders are good as well as everything else for each channel.

I love technology, but it is weird relying on virtual faders..just kind of scary...even though it displayed one thing for some reason I expected crazy volume once I unmuted the channel (fears unfounded as it never happened).

those little o-rings i linked earlier in this thread solved that for me, the physical knobs won't turn unless you grab them and turn them.

also, i always save my show snapshots with all the output faders (L-R and the 6 auxes) all the way down. when it's time to start checking, i can bring up each mix one at a time, avoiding surprises.
