Mackie DL1608 in the house!

So the sales guy was saying that there are downloadable effects for it. Was implying that I don't need a chorus pedal because the Mackie could do that. I've not seen anything like that, is there downloadable content?

Thanks for the rebate tip- looks like they have rebates on speakers too.

Bought it- one problem. They only had the lightning version, and I need the 30 pin version. Said they would call Mackie tomorrow and order me the adapter.

Wanted to use it on Sat for rehearsal. Any chance of finding an adapter locally? I can't find one that goes female lightning to male 30 pin so far.

Mine should arrive tomorrow. A couple of questions...

1. I see you can play music but only with the ipad docked? So to rough in from FOH with the ipad I need to hookup an ipod or something to one of the input's I assume?

2. I also have a DBX Driverack PA2 wich is also controlled via ipad. Anyone using one with the Mackie? I assume I can use the same ipad, and just jump between the two app's.

Maybe I'm the last one here to know about this, but it looks like QSC has a Invalid Link Removed coming that will compete in the small digital board niche.

For me, the interesting feature is that it promises multitrack recording directly to external USB hard drive (which would give it a serious features edge on this front over the Mackie, and a real convenience edge in live recording over the Behringer boards). The QSC also seems to have optional iPad control (w/ built-in, rather than add-on, wifi). It also has its own color control screen.

Projected September availability. I'm curious to check out the performance when this is a real product.

1) Yes, unfortunately.
2) I don't own a driverack, but yes, you'd just jump between apps as needed.

I just picked up a DL1608 this past week. Got a chance to play with it for about a rehearsal and a half before putting it into action at a gig over the weekend. Let me just say, I'm really happy with this purchase.

It was trial by fire, almost literally. It was an outdoor venue on a rather hot day with barely enough shade to cover the band. We'd only done a complete system setup once before, and the second time was quicker. I had the iPad streaming music thru the mains before the drummer was done setting up. But within a few minutes, the iPad shutdown due to excessive temperature. (Note to self: need to buy a small umbrella to shade the board when playing outdoors.)

Our sound guy used the iPad wireless during the set, and then re-docked during breaks to recharge the batteries and play break music. At one point, all the docking/undocking caused the iPad to lose sync and a quick reboot was required. (But since it was during a break, no harm done.) What we heard back from folks familiar with the band was that everything sounded so much clearer, crisper, etc. Our sound guy could move around the venue and make adjustments as needed without having to travel back to the board (which is usually located next to the stage). Going forward, I plan to leave an iPad in the dock and have our sound guy use an iPad Mini out front.

The sound guy does not have a lot (i.e. any) experience with iPads, so navigating was a bit confusing at times. The iPad would "sleep", and he didn't understand the concept of waking it up. Or he would accidentally bring down the IOS Notification Center screen while swiping between panels in the MasterFader app, or accidentally press the Home button and find himself back at the main screen.

Fortunately, there is a way in IOS to lock/restrict gestures and navigation within an app. Go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn on "Guided Access". Exit Settings and start the MasterFader app, then triple-press the Home button. This will start up Guided Access Mode and restrict gestures and navigation to the current running app, in this case MasterFader. The Notification Center panel will no longer appear on swipe down, nor will the Control Panel appear when swiping up, and pressing the Home button once does nothing.

The first time you enter Guided Access, you will be prompted to set a passcode. (Make it a simple one, e.g "1, 2, 3, 4", since you're only trying to disable unintended navigation.) When you want to end the Guided Access session, triple-press the Home button again and you will be prompted to enter the passcode that was set earlier. (This is why you want to make it one you'll remember. Guided Access is really intended for use in a classroom setting where you don't want a student to leave the application they're using and do something else with the iPad, like surf pOrn). After entering the passcode, you have the option to end the session, resume, or set other options.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to playing with this some more. As I said, I'm pretty happy so far.

I have a 2khz buzz in mine. Still waiting for a 30 pin adapter so I can use it (6 weeks later), but I've borrowed a lightning ipad to try it out. I have attached it to an amp via XLR and then by TS, using the Main outs and A1. I've fed it to a guitar amp, and to a home stereo. Every setup has that buzz. I have plugged everything in to the same wall outlet, and the tried a powerstrip.

Then moved it all to another room to try. Just can't get rid of the buzz.

The power amp starts the buzz as soon as I touch the ground on a TS to the Mackie chassis, so it sounds like a ground loop issue. But I've tried every method of connection, and I still get the problem.

Anyone else have any noise issues?

oddly enough, friday the 4th was the first chance i've had to use the system just as a soundguy, rather than playing bass at the same time.

man was that easy! i could casually walk around the room and check everything, and i finally settled on a nice mix position in back above the crowd. from there i could tweak EQs just right, and fairly quickly was just doing little more than turning the vocal delay off between songs, changing said delay time with the tap tempo button, and maybe nudging the guitar fader up for certain louder solos.

i found that out in the room away from the stage lights i could darken the ipad display to almost all the way down, which greatly saves battery life. over three sets and shutting the thing off and plugging it back into the mixer on setbreaks, i started at 100% charged and was only down to like 88% at the end of the night.

i also found out that carrying an ipad around in a packed bar on independence day is a scary thing! i almost had it knocked out of my hands at least once, and had to run away from an approaching patron with an overflowing beer mug foaming everywhere.

i highly recommend one of those new real glass screen protectors! they look and feel just like the naked screen, and they've gone from like $80 a year ago to $15 all over the web!

I use an Ipad mini myself, much more portable - and it's in a Griffin Survivor case that is beer proof and mostly drop resistant. OTOH I was playing and doing sound from the stage last night and an I knocked an entire cup of coffee of a shelf right above my table - hit the iPad mini dead on and barely missed the mixer :eek: . @#$%^& singer put it there and it was too dark to see, I was grabbing an LED fixture off the shelf to see the mixer trims with and the cord caught the cup :( .

I've had some major buzz with auxes as well, but I havent tried trs cables yet, I'm guessing that will do the trick. I ran sound for our band at an outdoor fireworks thing this last weekend, was so great to walk out front and mix the band wirelessly. However, its not easy to trust my bass sound out front since I dont have a wireless unit yet and no one is going to be able to duplicate my articulation for soundcheck.

Here's a situation I was confronted with a couple weeks ago regarding my iPad2. I had not yet updated the OS from OS6 to OS7, nor had I updated the Fadermaster app to the most recent with all the whizbang new stuff. I've just been too busy and the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, so I've put off the updates.

What happened was that my iPad2 didn't have a very worthy protective case, and it was dropped on a corner, cracking the left side of the screen for about 1.5". Everything still functions, and I used clear packing tape as a stop-gap measure, but I don't have much confidence in using this for critical live use interfacing with the DL1608, and decided to get a replacement iPad2, rather than deal with the newer iPads and fight with the different docking on the mixer. Thankfully, my current broken iPad2 is backed up on the Cloud, which is critical to this story.

When I went to the local Apple store to discuss my options with their "technicians", I was told that Apple nor I could install any previous version OS or apps on the new iPad2, and had assumed that this would mandate my updating the apps and DL1608 firmware, which, in turn, would force the loss of all of my snapshots and scenes (but not any saved Presets). I opted to forge ahead with a refurb 16gb/wifi/3g iPad2 ($300) and take my chances with re-doing all of my scenes on a gig-by-gig basis with the new iPad.

OK, so I got the new iPad2, and commenced to register the unit and re-install my stuff. I was not aware that the Cloud essentially restored a duplicate of all of the apps IN THEIR CURRENT VERSION state from my old iPad2 to my new iPad2. GOOD NEWS! THE APPLE TECHS DIDN'T TELL ME THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN! Now, I have both my old and new iPad2 able to control the DL1608 and app with the current state (old) app and firmware, and I don't need to manually recreate scenes and snapshots. They are all there on both machines!

Just thought I'd share this as I had incorrectly assumed getting a new iPad would have automatically forced me to use most recent version apps, and it doesn't. In the end, it appears that the Apple techs either didn't understand what I was doing, didn't understand how Cloud system restoration works, or they did know about this and just didn't want to say anything, for whatever reason. Hmmm.

hmm indeed; my ipad 3 automatically updates itself and all its apps whenever, and i haven't lost any show snapshots even when going from ios6 to 7 or from MF1 to 2.0.

all i've ever lost is if i made a new preliminary setup at home after a MF update and then loaded it into the mixer, after the firmware update the setup i made was gone :(

if icloud backup indeed saves the whole MF "library" that's pretty cool! although, i think some of that stuff is saved on the board too; you should be able to get another ipad, slap it on there and have it load the mixer's "show".

Walter, I guess my assumptions have been based on threads like these with respect to updating the app and 1608 firmware.

I suppose that, now since I have two iPad2 devices, I can update the app and the 1608 firmware and hope that if there are any problems, my second iPad2 will suffice to help restore shows and snapshots. Either way, bugs or not, I'll be taking the plunge to fully updated status soon, so wish me luck. LOL!
