Major disasters at gigs

Way back in the late 70's when I was a bit of a bad boy I was dating 5 girls at the same time, and at one gig by some extreme quirk of fate to my horror discovered they were all there in the room at the same time!

Luckily the venue was quite full and they were all standing at different places around the room and I managed to get through the gig without raising any suspicion from any of them - I think?

That's only disaster if they find out about each other and have sharp objects. :hiding:

Bonus points for every one that you made plans to "meet" later that night.

My old ska band was playing a show at a local pub we regulared at. We knew that it was a crappy venue, but hey, who books ska bands right?

Well, this one evening we were given a different sound man. We usually used the house cabs and base drum kit, so we thought nothing of it. Well, our lead guitarist was having problems through the first few songs with the sound dying out and coming back. He thought it was something with his guitar or cable, so he went and grabbed another guitar and cable. Turns out when he plugged in the "new" cable, he was electrocuted and sent unconscious to the ground for a second or two. (Not sure what he was also touching though...) He had a few choice words with the people at the pub but finished the set (idiotically for him and for all of us) anyway.

I didn't realize that he could have possibly died until after the show looking up information about how this could have happened. I still have the recording of the set that night... lol

Drummer broke the bassdrum skin during the first song last night.

Similar story.......having BEGGED the drummer in the headline band to let us his his drumkit our drummer broke a tom skin in the first number!!!

I remember a fair bit of money having to change hands.

Speaking of drummers I did one gig where the drummer forgot his snare and had to disappear for 2 hours in search of a rental one.

Dunno if it this counts as a gig disaster since the gig never really happened...

Circa 1990ish, we were to open for A Flock Of Seagulls at a club in Ybor City. We were set up, soundchecked and good to go! Went up the street to Hardy's to eat and change. We were gone for about 30 minutes. Got back to the club and the club was taped off with yellow police tape and barraccaded! There were BATF all over the place in masks w\full gear and the local police too!

Turns out they'd been casing the club for about a year prior for selling drugs, serving minors and other illegal activity.

There was a club I used to play in college all the time that used to pay us and other bands really well and no one was ever in the place. We couldn't figure out how he was staying in business ... until the day the Feds raided and shut it down for being a drug money front operation. Doh!

Gig disasters:

Solo -- Played a gig at a itty bitty club once that had the ladies room behind the stage. There was a skinny little hallway between the back of the stage and the bathroom. I had a plastic cup on top of my bass amp with about 1 inch of beer in it and some drunk girl wobbled into my rig, cup went over, beer into top vents of amp, heard a loud crackly POP and turned around just in time to see a little squiggle of smoke come out. That day was only saved because some local band had left a 50 watt guitar head at the club and I plugged it in to finish the gig. That was also the last day I went to a gig with no backup amp.

Group -- 1994: Through a friend of a friend, got a fill-in gig with a local band playing original material after their bass player quit. Was supposed to be a one-time only gig. Somehow they had managed to wangle a headlining gig at the Masquerade, one of the big Atlanta rock clubs and I was promised $100 for the night. Learned the tunes off a tape, did one rehearsal, went down to the club -- these guys were the most disorganized mess ever. Took forever and a year to get their gear set up, arguing with the sound man, arguing with each other, bitching about the monitors, complaining, you name it. I was getting a good idea of why their last bass player had quit. The coup de grace was the drummer took off with some chicks to go smoke some weed or something and was nowhere to be found when it was time to play. The rest of the band decided they'd go on anyway -- we were playing a FOURTH song drummerless when the FOH guy, now thoroughly disgusted, shut the mains off right in the middle of a song and told everyone to get the hell out of there, the gig was over. Which provoked yet another argument with the management of the club, and the last argument of the night was me telling them they could all go **** themselves after I didn't get paid a nickel for coming down there. Absolutely INSANE.

Played a gig at a large venue in the country - I was doing roadie as well as bass.
After the very successful gig the Manager told us we had 15 minutes to get our PA/backline out of the venue.
Confused, we packed up and found out he struck out with one of our backup singers hence his desire to leave quickly.
As we started to pack the gear into the truck (it was still on the ground out back because of his haste) he turned the outside lights off.
Then it started to rain.
After we finished the pack and started off we got a DOUBLE flat on the truck and just resigned ourselves to sleeping in the cab until morning.
Come morning I walked around the next bend to find a 24 hour garage and Motel.........!!!????!!!
Only on the road!

drummer got up from his kit and somehow sent his drink flying right on to the vent on my amp head. right in the middle of the gig. brand new amp, used it twice. ruined. tried calling he guy, never returned my phone calls, never saw him again. no apology...nothing. i had to play through the PA for the rest of the evening, and then go out and buy a new amp the next day :scowl:

Near disaster - we played in a club where the stage was right beside the front door. We were in mid song when I noticed the lead guitarist had stopped playing. I looked over to see him leap over the railing and run out the front door.

Some guy had stolen my guitarist's Gibson Thunderbird, case and all, and run out the front door. He realized he couldn't outrun my guy so he dropped the guitar and continued running.

Total disaster - after that band broke up the other guitarist had joined another band. He had an alcohol problem and had apparently been abusing his wife. One Friday night the cops showed at his gig, then handcuffed and arrested him. I'm glad it wasn't my gig.

My most embarassing moment goes all the way back to high school. We had a jazz band that played some easy standards and pop stuff, and I had only been playing bass for about a year.

At the end of the year, we went to the university in our town for a "jazz clinic", which for some reason involved us playing a song in front of a bunch of jazz pros, including Reggie Workman. I was so painfully nervous about my skills that forgot to put the volume up on my electric bass once the song started. I basically mimed the whole piece without even noticing it because I was focusing so hard on reading the music. As soon as the song ended, I realized it and turned beet-red. My orchestra director looked like he was going to tear my head off.

Reggie was really cool though, he just said "make sure you check the settings on your amp so you can be heard through the rest of the band." Classy guy.

In one of my first bands, there was a fight at just about every gig. It didn't seem to matter what type of place we played, someone got their butt whuped. At this one in particular, this guy dressed in black with a keychain the size of my car announced to my drummer that in Florida, he was known as El Blanco Diablo. My drummer said "Here, we call you a$$hole" That set the tone for this guys mood that night. Later on someone spilled this guys drink, and he cut their ear off with a switchblade. It was mayhem. My guitarist got pulled over while he was leaving, the cops thinking that he was the White Devil trying to flee. A year or two later, I was at a friends pig-roast, and was telling this story, when the guy next to me said "That was you?!" and pointed to his mangled ear.
Apparently, they never found the rest of his ear, and the white devil was caught and sent to jail. True story.

On Friday night we were playing at this club, and the crowd was into it and asked for a encore.

We usually don't half ass it after we played our song, so we had already switched of the amps and unplugged the cables... but the crowd insisted so we wanted to play one more song, "The hand that feets" by NIN. Unfortunately, the guitarist had turned down the volume, and due to bad stage lighting and playing a supplied head he didn't check it, but blamed his effectpedals/cables.

So it was just the drummer, the singer and me. People still liked it, but i wish we wouldn't have played the encore.

Wow, seems like something from a movie. "the attack of El Blanco 'A******' Diablo"

This isnt exactly a disaster at a gig or a disaster at all (After reading this thread, Ill never complain). We were practicing for our first 'gig' a while back and we were kinda short on practise time. We had to switch guitarists, add a singer and change teh songs we were gonna cover a couple of times. Not to mention the crappy drummer. After practising our main song, we didnt have much time for the other one. So on the day of the final checks and run through we practised at our school music room till it was our turn for the practise.
When we get there, the person who was to sort everythign out with the sound manager hadnt told him that we were using amps. Now our school sound manager isnt exactly the most friendly guy. Now we managed to convince him to hook the stuff up by the next day (the day of the gig). But for the run through, it was just my fairly decent bass amp, and my guitarist's tiny tiny tiny amp. Well, before we got there we were brimming with confidence and just ready to explode. But on stage, I couldnt hear myself or the guitar, same with guitarist, drummer had no clue what was going on, singer couldnt hear ANYTHING (the amps were placed right next to the drums). After basically screwing that up we got a few nervous claps and some encouraging words from friends. The song we had to practise was just a disaster. Now with 24 hours to learn a song and play together, and to teach our drummer how to drum we were pretty bummed. We were actually thinking about not playing and giving up all that hope.
but we still managed to practise and get it right, fixed the amps to the speakers and everythign was marginally OK the next day. Our drummer still was crap, and I couldnt turn my bass up cause of some prob with the speakers and the cable going from my amp to the speakers was messed up such that I had to turn it every so slightly to get it working.
Now for the first song, the cable was kaputt! Im playing my heart out and at the middle of the song I realise im just miming, the CABLE WAS LOOSE! I had to play on tho', pray that my miming was in time with the guitar. the second song was better tho, althought it was just the reverse. My bass was going through, but the guitarist's amp wasnt passign through to the speakers and it was only coming through that tiny amp.
All in all tho', people loved it (I dont know why, but whos complaining), and probably was the most exciting time of my life :D
Wow that was long, and it wasnt even a major disaster.... Sorry if I wasted your time XD

1. Drove from Chicago to Iowa City to play an outdoor gig that got rained out.

2. Played at NW side bar in Chicago where a fight between rival gang members broke out. Just fists and cue sticks, no weapons. Lot's of blood, though.

3. Had my 1980's GK 200RCB amp head go out while playing my first "gig" in high school. :bawl:

4. High school again, tripped while trying to jump up on the drum riser during a battle of the bands thing. Nice to give the audience a laugh. :D

5. At a suburban bar gig, my guitarist gets so loaded on these mega-margarita drinks, we couldn't finish the set. :rollno:

Heh, got me thinking if anyone has had a disaster where they tried to do a guitar strap flip thing and have it go flying :smug:

Well, I did get this story: In my Praise and Worship Band, I wasn't the first bassist. Apparently the first guy during a gig decided to do the fling the bass around his neck think. Sure enough, at the end of the rotation the bass caught the ground and ripped the headstock off the neck. He actually super glued it back on and to this day, I believe, it still holds.

Gets more funny when you realize he is a very serious classical bassist. Good guy too.

So, the sh*t that I've been holding back is about to come out, and suddenly its bright outside and everything stops. Everyone and their brother out here in BFE is out in the road with a chainsaw trying to cut their way down the road, and they eventually see us and we get out. My buddy has $7k in damage to his sh*tty bronco, so he ended up buying a new blazer. Definitely one of the weirdest and most intense moments in my life.

So you messed your pants and your buddy bought some new business casual clothing? Good story.

Was setting up to play a wedding reception in a church hall (behind the sanctuary). The decorater had wrapped some netting around some candellabras- and guess what hot dripping wax did. We did manage to extinguish the flames and clear the smoke before the ceremony was over- thank God
