Gasing for another bass. Been looking at a few different models but keep coming back to either a G&L L2000 or a Lakland 44-01. The looks of the lakland, something about the upper horn but I keep being drawn to it, but I've heard nothing but good things about them. I've played the G&L and liked it but the lakland calls but I don't know why. Could you help me make up my mind?

Make Me Like Lakland

Heres a reason I like Lakland that's a little different...
About eight or nine years ago, I bought a Inca Silver USA 55-94 off of bassgear from a guy that turned out to be a total tool-bag and tried to swindle me by never sending me the bass after he had been paid. Fake phone numbers, address, all kinds of things... all I had was his real name and a P.O. Box number and the state he lived in. (BTW, this person used to be on Talkbass as well).
As a last resort, I called Lakland to see if they knew anything about this guy. Turns out, they did. After I told them what was going on, they gave me his real phone number and real address. Turns out he had the bass in for some work at some point. They totally ratted him out to me.
If it hadn't been for Lakland helping me out, I would have lost my $1600 bucks. As it was, it took a lawyer (an uncle) 6 months of sending nasty letters before this guy started returning my money. Never did quite get all of it back, but close.
I still owe Lakland a bass purchase for that one, and I won't forget it.

Will, I'm not sure that's an endorsement, I'm not even sure it's legal.
Lakland are phenomenal instruments, though. A true upgrade to Fender (and I'm a Fender fan) in every respect. There is nothing bad about a Lakland.

After many years of playing and owning several different high end instruments...I can honestly say my 55-94 does it all!!!!
And I'm a former owner of a G&L L2000...nice enough bass, but it's not on the same level as a Lakland IMHO....

I don't think it is illegal for Lakland to give out costumer information unless they have specifically stated that they will not do so. Outside of a few professions (law, medicine) there is usually no implied customer privacy. This is why many businesses make the claim that they will not share your information.
The fact that this is not an endorsement is true.
Oh, my above post only applies to the USA. I have no idea what consumer privacy laws are like in other countries.
Giving out things like address and phone numbers are the questionable acts. I'd be furious if a company gave a private citizen my information.
I owned a Lakland 5 string for about 9 months, I hated it after 6.
Preamp/controls too complicated, Anonymous tone, buying 35' dr's in Australia was a pain in the arse, couldn't play it sitting without a strap.
Best thing about that bass was the gig bag it came in..

Since I grabbed that LBP Lakland DJ4 bass in mint condition here on TalkBass, I never looked back to find a better neck in any other basses !!! To me, the best necks profiles out there !!!
Lol, guys, please don't harp too much on Lakland. They did the right thing by me and I will never forget it. That's all.
You gotta remember this was back when Lakland was like what, two guys sitting in Chicago? Instant executive decision to do the right thing. I won't forget.
BTW, more to the OP... every Lakland I have played has been top notch in every respect. You can always sell it on it one doesn't work for you. Try one and you'll like it.

I love my 55-02's only basses i own now, i have never player the american version, but at the prices you can get a skyline at they can't be beat. truly an amazing bass.

I have owned 2 Lakland 44-01's and loved them both. Had to sell them due to $ issues. Great necks if you like the thin profile which I do. I would certainly buy another if the price was right and I had the funds.

Having played and loved both G&L & Lakland, I am a Lakland guy. Even the Skyline series is fantastic and I love the wide range of basses they have. G&L really only interests me in the SB-2 and the JB-2, but that's it..and at that, I feel like they're a totally different animal than a traditional P or J..more aggressive. Lakland gives me the traditional vibe I love so much. They just feel better to me as well compared to G&L. I know G&L has a wide variety of necks but there is just something to me about a Lakland neck that just feels like home. I do wish their colors on the Skyline series was a bit more expansive, but that's a minor complaint.

I've owned 40+ G&Ls. I've also owned 10 US Laklands and 3 or 4 Skylines, and used to be on the Artist Roster. Both companies are really great to work with, but their instruments are very different beasts, imo.
