hi all,

im planning to make an Electric upright, something similar to an Ergo, but i have no idea of how to acomplis this and i do not have an electric uprigth to take as a model, so, anyidea of how i could get info about sizes, measures, specks, pickup, etc...??

any suggestion will be welcome (except the "quit the project" one!! )

p.d.: wood- yes, pvc - no

+1 on the Bob Gollihur links - lots of example to look at. I was all set to buy a neck from Bob and build the rest myself when I met Bill Paulin who ended up doing the woodwork for me - here's his prototype: Link Removed
I just added the pickup & preamp and am now a very happy player.

Hi!
Sorry for posting this into two different threads, but I need input on this.
I've started building my EUB, and planning to have a "floating" type tailpiece on it...
this is the thread in the luthier's corner:

Frank was the only who replied so far, but I like to hear something from EUB-ers, too! :)
How many of your electric uprights have floating or fixed tailpiece, and which do you prefer?
Any opinions are welcome.
Thanks!

Looks Cool. I have started my own EUB project. I am planning on just running the strings through the body similart to how Bob Gollihur did his. I think it will be simpler, plus will let me make a shorter smaller instrument. The sound may be slightly better with the tailpiece, but the whole reason I am building the EUB is to cut down on size so I don't have to lug my upright everywhere.

Sounds that you're going for that 41" scale. I don't want this change after BG, staying at 34" is safer for me:p
So I have to use BG strings, but they are SO short for my current tailpiece (why did I not measure the things more accurate?:scowl: ) that it's unusable.

No problem, anyway, I wasn't absolutely satisfied with that piece of aluminium..
Let's say, I go for that overhanging tailpiece - what material should I use for tailgut?
the total string tension is about under 100 Kg (200 pounds)
I had two ideas so far: a) is to twist multiple heavy-duty threads together, b) is to do the same with copper strands and solder them, then paint it black.
May sound silly....

I guess the tailgut must have some dampening factor, which is good to achieve that thump..

what are the real tailguts made from?

well.. I've found several interesting threads on this, so I'm sorry again... somehow I never thought that it's been already discussed here!:hiding:

search is your friend!;)

now I'm overloaded with inputs, so it may take a while to decide, what to do. May be I'll simply saw the thing off, and hang on a rope to get closer to the bridge..

I've been considering building a beater EUB to use for jazz band and wierd alt-rock jam sessions. I've got some bass guitar tuners lying around, which appear solid enough to handle larger strings.

I've got a board of mahogany... somewhere between 6 and 8 feet long, 3/4" thick and ~4" wide. Figure I'll get a couple of other boards... something relatively tough... to use with this and laminate a couple strings of each together as the body/neck.

I'll just go with a cheap piezo pickup and run it direct to an amp for now. I'll try and doodle up some ideas before I start the project and post them up here.
