I like my Epiphone F mando. Really good quality for around $500 new.

Mandolincafe is a great site and the people are amazing. Some of their mandolins make my Fodera look like a Squier in comparison though. Don't even bother to look at the cost of Gilchrists. Crazy!

I love playing mandolin in any case. If you learn the major chords (pretty easy) you will be a welcome addition to any campfire or jam. If you think of a mandolin as strung as an upside down bass (sort of, but tuned in 5ths), it might make sense.

Mandolins can be cool.
I usually pick one up & strum on it in a music store (I usually pick up a cheaper one)
One local store rents instruments and has a 2 or 3 rental sales a year--I'm thinking of renting a manolin one of these days--just to check it out.

When I started on Mandolin I had a Flatiron A model flat back that was very nice for Celtic music. Later I had a short scale octive mandolin made for my by Stefan Sobell and I still love that axe many years later. I missed the mandolin though so I picked up an Applause (i.e. cheap Ovation) that I used through a Trace Elliot accoustic amp and the combo sounds pretty good.
