Mandolin?

Hi everyone.
I love playing the bass but I also would like to start playing the mandolin as well.

Can someone recommend me a good beginner mandolin? I'm looking to spend less than $150 (US).

I bought an F-style Copley a few months ago, new, with hardshell case, from eBay, for around $150. I think it came straight from Simba Products. Not a bad mano at all; certainly good enough to learn with. Has a solid spruce top, which was imprtant to me. I wouldn't get a laminated top.

I consider mandolin my second instrument. I started out on an [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. My buddy started on a Mid-Missouri flattop. They're both very decent, affordable mandos.

As far as retailers, I would recommend Folk of the Wood. I have dealt with them several times and they know what they're doing. They have several mandolins in your price range. Also, check out the Mandolin Store. They have an Epiphone Invalid Link Removed in your range too.

Thanks for the links! I've been toying with the idea of getting a Mandolin since I played around with one in a studio years ago. The one I've been looking at lately is an "F" style Alvarez.

I have an F-style that a Ft Worth luthier made out of several pieces of different mandolins that were bound for the bandsaw. It was several Hondo products that weren't good enough to sell and were to be destroyed. He sweated the glue joints apart and kept the wood that he liked best and made two good mandolins out of several craptacular ones. I'm sure there's a moral there somewhere.

I gave it to my daughter to learn on. If she get's competent on it, I will get her one of those Epiphone electric mandolins that look like a tiny Thunderbird. Then she can rock outon the electric and play the acoustic around campfires with me down in Kerrville.
