Marcus Miller on his Sterling

Maybe if he was in a corporate band music video with electronically generated audience hands up and synchronized dance moves he'd be more into it. Nah. What you see in this still frame of Marcus is THE REAL DEAL, imho.

Last time I saw MM play a fretless live I think he was using his Fodera.

I was surprised but not surprised to read he was playing a Sterling. I've long seen those basses as the "secret weapon" of the EBMM line. Actually, I've always thought of them as the Jazz bass of the EBMM line. Slim neck, really punchy, and with electronics that allow them to get warmer and more upfront than a StingRay (though the wide array of pickup options in recent years means not all of them have the same switching options).

Yeah I always preferred the Sterling. I was going to tour with EB Basses due to an endorsement and picked that as my bass of choice from them.

I saw him here in Houston last Sunday and it was great! The Sterling was indeed a lined fretless. The drummer was Charles Haynes.

I was there at the House of Blues also! It was actually too good lol! I wish I could have heard his old Fodera but MM sounded great on his MM!

Longtime drummer Poogie Bell was fired a couple of years ago, reportedly for unprofessional behavior.

I went on a MM cruise where I saw him perform with is own band, and backing Herbie Hancock and many others.
Every show was a bass lesson, especially on what not do. He never upstaged the song.

He is obviously a top player, but also a great bandleader, producer, a paragon of taste and a real good person.

I have only seen him live once, at the Montreal Jazziest in a double bill with the Flecktones a few years ago. I am much more into what he's playing now than what he was doing then. Monster musician. I like him best in a jazz idiom like the vid above. Sweet.

Seen Marcus live a few times. He always delivers the goods live. Always surrounds himself with a great band. Not too thrilled with his latest CD though, Tales, M2 and Renaissance are more my taste. Good to see he is still trying to reinvent himself musically though.

Thanks. Did not know that. I really liked the chemistry between Marcus and Poogie. I'm disappointed he's no longer in the band.

Yeah I looked at the video before I made the comments I guess what set me off was the fact that he's playing two basses that I don't think he has endorsement deals with and the one he does have one with he's hardly seen with? I guess the former small business owner came out in me and I ranted sorry but that.

I wouldn't be surprised that his deal with Fender included a clause saying he was not allowed to produce a signature bass that looked the same as his Fender model. So that means if he wants to continue to play his existing basses he won't be playing the Sire. Maybe Sire will later do a more upmarket version that he might play.

I have already been moving away from the GAS thing, but after seeing Marcus Miller as a band leader for the first time, I don't think I will ever blame my gear for anything again because it is truly your ideas and skill that make the difference. Sound can be made acceptable very quickly, even if it is not ideal

I imagine that whilst Fender terminated things with him there might be additional trademark issues on his existing Jazz model with Fender. But we don't get to see the legalese!
