miles davis album - the man with the horn

Absolutely killer first track with a very young MM playing inspired funk walk.

Miles had been in the throes of some bad substance abuse and depression, so bad no one took the garbage out in his loft for over a year. MM got Miles cheered up and wanting to play again. Great album.

My favorite "Wow, Marcus Miller played on that?!?!" tune is the song "Don't Work That Hard" from Scritti Politti's Cupid & Psyche 85 album.
I mean, as soon as you hear the bass there's no doubt, but it's still kind of a mind-frak to imagine that band sitting around in the studio surrounded by their gigatons of MIDI samplers going "hmm, this track isn't quite happening...I know, let's get that guy from Miles Davis' band!"

It was more the suggestion of producer Arif Mardin to bring Marcus and Will Lee in on that project. IMO, Miller's premier Scritti performance was on "Boom There She Was" on their follow-up album "Provision". There's a Chaka tune called "Love of a Lifetime" that's essentially a Scritti piece with her on vocals, and Marcus is on that too.

One of my favorite recordings with MM as a sideman is Kazumi Watanabe's Mobo 1 & 2, MM paired with Omar Hakim, other tracks have Sly and Robbie sometimes with all 4 grooving.

not a marcus fan at all. the one exception being the Live Tom Scott record "Apple Juice". instead of slap pop odyessey's he plays fingerstyle in the groove for 98% of it, it's excellent and his tone is also excellent.

They probably just don't update at mm.com - this list is much more current. Click on "Credits". He doesn't play as much on other people's albums as much as he used to because he's busy as a leader now, but he still does take on outside projects.
