The first time I heard him was a similar experience to yours. I was blown away.

I met him in Sydney about 10 years ago, he was a real gentleman.

I still take a lot from Marcus in my own playing. Love his approach.

Paul Tingen's great book, Miles Beyond, called this stuff "chromatic Funk".

For me he absolutely kills it on Come Get It.

If so, I wish I knew they did clinics there as I grew up in Bensalem lol would have loved to see MM there.

Yes, that was the location. It was called Bass Specialties. The owner, Glenn, was awesome.

Side note: Glenn plays in a killer Steely Dan tribute band called Countdown to Ecstasy. They don't gig much but it's worth your time.

saw the jeff healey performance (one of my favorite musicians, wish i could have seen him live) on video years ago. that one just kills! one of the bands i played in did that tune so i searched out every version of it i could find on video at the time and i think that one is my favorite. wish i could play it half as well (hell, 10% as well!) as marcus does! thanks for putting that one up there.

Thanks for posting this video with the late Jeff Healey. I saw him live in his early days, what a great talent and person. Later he hosted a radio show where he played old jazz records from his personal collection and introduced each song with details of who played on it and interesting circumstances surrounding the recordings. I enjoyed listening to those shows, he obviously had a great love of early jazz and the amazing musicians that were pioneers in that era. RIP Jeff. Great to watch Marcus really enjoying this performance!

not sure if you are aware but jeff was an incredible cornet player as well as a guitar player. so he really enjoyed and was incredibly knowledgeable about early jazz and especially those performances that include brass and especially cornet. i am so jealous you got to see him live. i try to remember these types of posts every time i wonder if it is worth the drive to see live music (we have to drive a minimum of an hour to see any shows and often 2 to 3 hours one way).

I only know Jeff Healey really from the great cult movie Road House ('pain don't hurt...'), incredible playing and some acting chops as well as obvious affection between him and the star. Prototype of CW rowdy bar with the band behind chicken wire? Got a CD of his, have to rip it and listen more. What a fine and rounded and knowledgeable musician he was. RIP.

not the worlds greatest movie but i love it! lots for jeff healey but also patrick swayze and esp sam elliot. (the double douche line kills me every time...) anyway give a listen to jeff's music. really great stuff!

90% of the time when I hear something and think "man that bass player is fantastic," it turns out to be Marcus Miller.
