Marina Bass

Hi, I'm an excellent new forum. I just bought this under Marina and I am looking for information since it is very scarce the data of these basses what if it is that it was made in Japan between the years 75 and 80. Any information could be of great help to know more about these low. Thank you so much.

Judging by the amount of rust on this bass it must have spent a lot of time at a marina; perhaps that's why the paint looks like it does, too.

I might be wrong here but I have a sneaky suspicion that the A tuner was replaced!

What makes you think so? Maybe the E, D, and G tuning keys were the ones that were replaced?

It seems that one was apparently replaced.

The E, D, and G are the originals I think

if I found it in poor condition but to restore it. I have two options or restore it to original since its original state like this almost do not existor take it to Jackson JS2 JS style.

I think you should replace the nut first and see how it plays. Then you can better decide if it is worth investing in restoration and decide what needs to be done. Disassembling the bridge and cleaning and polishing the parts will make a huge difference in appearance.

thank you if that is the idea. I will publish images of the restoration process.

As Bb says, make sure it is playable first, anything after that is more for the cosmetic looks of the bass.

I've saw a few "by Marinas". They did a passive version of the SGC Nanyo Bass Collection SB series and later something very close to the Peavey Grind.Both of those were made in Korea.

Made in Japan between 1975 and 1980 is highly unlikely. For starters the pointy headstock was a later fad,they were out there but not familiar enough to make copying worthwhile,Far Eastern guitars/basses stuck to more traditional designs.

The SGC Nanyo was itself styled after the Tune Bass Maniac,that made the "by Marina" version a copy of a copy. Those appeared in the 90's after Nanyo went bust. Made by the same company that produced the SX guitars back then.

Afraid I can't tell you much about Marina.

Marina was a brand built in Taiwan (1986-91) by Chuan Yin Musical Instruments Co., and in Korea by Cort.

That's what I was thinking, too, but I am not too up on pointy instruments (except for the 1984 Alembic Exploiter I had in the late '90s) so I did not comment on that.

Marina Bass Model JB-2 so it was left without much investment and it sounds pretty good!
