matching heads with cabs

I've always bought combos, or a package deal for a head and cab "combo" but I'm not sure how what I should look at when I'm mixing different brands. I'm looking at a peavey tour 750, if it makes a difference. Should I stick with Peavy for the best results, or should I explore with some other makers? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Only the manufacturer would tell you that their amps sound best with their cabs. I can think of many other brands that I would try out, depending on what you are looking for in terms of sound.

ok, so what I'm getting from this is that all heads are compatible with all cabs and vice versa? If I'm looking at getting a 4x10 under $500, what would you guys suggest? I'm looking at getting a mixture of beefy lows and punchy mids. The majority of the stuff I play is Ska/punk or jazz.

Brand doesn't matter.

Ohms matter. Watts matter to a degree (like, don't put a thousand watts through a speaker that's only rated for 200). But the most important thing is to make sure that the cab and head are compatible in terms of ohms. There's lots of stuff on this board about the subject.
