He has a YouTube channel "Learn Jazz Bass with Matt Rybicki" that I discovered about a month ago, and what a monster player/teacher he is. I'm revealing my ignorance here as he's most likely a long time contributor here on Talkbass. Just amazing intonation, timing, technique and he conveys his knowledge so well. He's a faculty member of Julliard, so I shouldn't be surprised.
I'm a 62 yr old electric player who began at the age of 14. In the early 90's I began teaching myself jazz with two of Ed Friedland's books (Jazz Bass/Expanding Walking Bass Lines), and then discovered and bought 5 Jamey Aebersold CD/Books covering a variety of standards. Through the years I've been incorporating some techniques that are basic to double bass players: using open strings more frequently (offering perfect reference intonation for the band/myself, allowing my left hand to get a momentary break, using the open strings to free my left hand for a smooth transition to a new area of the neck), fretless vibrato, and all the excellent theory that is standard to an upright player.
After years of playing and gigging in rock, blues and metal bands, I finally got more serious, pulled the trigger and now have an excellent electric fretless. I've had 2 other fretless basses over the years, but really only dabbled. Now, for the first time, I have enough confidence that I ran a few ads and currently have a jazz trio I'm part of. The next step is to make the leap and purchase an upright which will be in the near future.
