matte finish pickguard

I hope this is in the correct forum. I'm putting together a Precision bass and am going for a black matte look. The body is a matte finish white and all the hardware has a black matte finish. I have a black pickguard that is shiny black and was wondering how you could give the black pickguard a matte finish.
I'm assuming by sanding with some type of material but I don't want it to show any scratches. I guess I could buy a black matte finished pickguard but I would prefer to use the one that I have.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

very fine sandpaper or 0000 steel wool should knock that shine down.

800, 1000, And finally 1200 or 1500 wet sanding the whole thing.

Thanks for the suggestions. I used 0000 steel wool and it worked perfect. No scratches just a nice matte finish.
