How about this: Hendrix's guitar playing took years and years of honing his technique, phrasing, and tone to be able to have complete mastery and control of his guitar. This pop star has no control over her voice, and you can tell from the way it cracks and goes off-key. Hendrix played the National Anthem just the way he wanted to. It's as simple as that.

For the record, I am a HUGE fan of Jimi Hendrix.

I didn't know much about Kat DeLuna until today. According to Wiki, she started performing at age 12. She's 20 now, so she has 8 years under her belt. Even the best have bad days.

As far as Hendrix's version, there are Hendrix afficianados who think his Woodstock performance to among one of his worst. The band he was playing with was new and it was his first gig with them, as the Experience broke up just prior to Woodstock. Jimi's set set was delayed until Monday morning, so alot of people left and the band was tired. From listening to any of his performances, he does much improvisation and plays with a stream of consciousness. Jimi Hendrix's version of the National Anthem was similar to what he's always done, improvision of wickedly cool stuff on the guitar that pushes the envelope.

I can't access videos at work, but in my mind the greatest rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was Marvin Gaye's performance at the 1982(?) NBA All-Star game. I was 5 years old and it was captivating even then.

The worst I've ever heard was Carl Lewis butchering it. I'll have to see if I can find a clip, but there's nothing better than a guy saying "Uh oh!" during his own performance. Plus, after his voice cracks, he says, "I'll make up for it in a minute", which he doesn't - unless you count utter hilariousness as "making up for it".

I would prefer the anthem only be played before International sporting matches. Personally, I think it cheapens the song and sentiment to play it repeatedly before routine sporting events.

I attend a lot of High School sports, and often there are two sports playing simultaneously. So while the soccer team is standing and "reverently" lstening to the anthem, the baseball team next door is rocking to AC/DC between innings. It's silly.

Love it before international matches, however. I attend a fair number of Soccer games with international teams, and it adds quite a bit of patriotic fervor to the matches.

Distortion is an effect, electronically controlled, with predictable outcome. I think I can say with certainty that Kat DeLuna didn't intend for her voice to crack. There's a significant difference between an intended effect and an unintended consequence, Jive.

It's obvious she can sing a little. It's also obvious she decided to exceed what the limits of her voice are, and the price she paid was a stadium full of boos, and long-term Internet lulz.

I don't see what was so bad about it. I mean, I, personally, hate that style of "Hip-hopping" it up, but she did no better or worse than most anthem singers nowadays. She hit a few slight wrong notes here and there, but nothing really glaring. At least she didn't lip-sync it like how most pop acts perform now.

Maybe the Texas bunch wanted to hear it done with a country twang??
