One of my heroes when I was a kid starting out on bass. Great sound. He played a late 60's Jazz with an EB-0 pickup in the mid position and the bridge pickup disconnected through West 200 watt tube amps, earthquake city!

I was 16 in 1969 when this came out, I can definitely remember trying these songs out in basements.

I was born in 1960, so my first exposure to GFR came when I was about 10, 1970 or so.
Lee Dorman/Iron Butterfly, and Jack Bruce/Cream came along first, but when my brother brought home Grand Funk Railroad's albums, Mel Schacher's Basslines grabbed my attention, and held onto it. Apparently, I'm not the only one here who was particularly taken by the tracks, 'Inside Looking Out', and 'Paranoid'.

I didn't get my first Bass until I was about 16. Previous to that, I played Mel's basslines on the lower four strings of my Stella Harmony acoustic guitar. (With my fingers, no less. Now THAT was some tight string spacing. Lol.) No way to get a fuzz tone out of an acoustic guitar.
Ah, good times.

Mel was one of my bass heroes as well. I tried to play like him in the early 70s. I saw them three times at Boston Garden, the last time was when they added the keyboard player. I always preferred them as a power trio. The red album was GFR at their finest.
