If I had to submit my 2 choices now, I would probably go for Hand To Hold On To and Crumblin Down. I also like Check It Out but I am not crazy about the middle break.
I bet the other guys will chime in with some of the tracks you guys have mentioned above. We'll see....

ROCK in the USA is a fun one to play and is a good one to get booties moving on the dance floor. Only problem is it's going to be difficult to cover the recorder solo with a three piece

Our drummer plays a mean kazoo (he is amazing!) and can handle that solo.

At rehearsal last night for our 3 piece, primarily 60's and 70's Rock, we were discussing adding some new material for our May gig.

Somehow we decided that we will each propose 2 Mellencamp songs, for a total of 6, to be worked up at our next rehearsal.

We have to sing our suggested songs.

Looking for advice on songs that might work in a 3 piece and I would like to avoid his most common hits....

Any thoughts or JCM fans?

Do Wild Nights, and you get to shine on the bass. Alot of people think Mellencamp wrote it.

In the band I played in the early 80's, We actually enjoyed playing "Hurts So Good." Of course at that time, he called himself "John Cougar." I also agree with "Wild Nights", but actually prefer the original version by Van Morrison.

Scarecrow is a good song. We use to do a version in our originals band that was more intense and it always came off well.

We also did a mashup of "ROCK in the USA" into "What I like about You" by The Romantics. I forget exactly how, but the riffs are similar enough to get two songs for the price of one.

In my band we do the opposite. "What I like about you" and instead of the solo we go straight into "R.O.C.K in the USA". Works perfectly!

You have to mess with it a bit to fill up open spaces in a three piece but it can be done. I would get busy where the guitar was spare and lay off when he was riffing

This is in our set list and always has girls dancing. Upbeat and fast. We also do Hurt So Good.

authority song and hurts so good are two we just added recently. Authority song was actually much more difficult to put together than I expected. Hurts so good sounded great from the first time we played it. Guess I'll post again after april 8th (our next gig) and see what the crowd thinks.
I've tried to do "pink houses" in a previous band and it fell super flat -- just came off as really boring. We didn't even bother to inflict it on the audience.

Honestly that is JMC 5 songs too many. No body is aching to see a cover band do a whole set of this guy now. You'd be better off doing a Springsteen half set.
