Double Bass Melt Melty - Quick Rosin Revival!

This discussion comes up now and again, what to do when your rosin starts drying out. It’s always easy to tell when your rosin is on holiday. You swipe and swipe and nothing seems to change. You start to notice the tell-tale rosin dust at the end of your fingerboard. I’m no expert on anything but this is what I do when that happens.

The offending rosin. Dry and ineffectual. An insult to the sacrificed horse hair on your bow.

The sad rosin placed in a slightly warmed toaster oven. If the foil is malleable I roll it back up before heating. In this case the foil (lead foil?) was pretty scrunched up and embedded. I thought it best to just leave it be and watch the rosin heat up carefully.

Once it melts to a nice shine but not dripping over the sides I pull it out of the oven, wait a moment and then place it in the refrigerator for ten minutes. The result is a softened rejuvenated cake of rosin worthy of any formal occasion.
