Double Bass Memorising pieces and studies?

Yes, I've been inspired by a parallel thread about memorising chords and the advice given.
I'm terrible at memorizing studies and pieces I'm working on.
Has anyone any methods or advice? Constant repetition and testing yourself?
Or maybe I need to try more, put more time into memorizing rather than lazily reading?
In previous lives, I was able to memorize different sorts of data, but music is a problem.
Although 55, I reckon my memory is the same as always.

I memorize faster away from the instrument. I sit with the score and go over short chunks.

For me the key to memorizing is that the piece makes musical sense as a whole and I'm not just paying sections. If I listen to a bunch of versions that helps a lot.

I don't have much of a problem memorizing tunes, but fingerings and bowings don't seem to imprint well unless I really drill on them.
