I thought this info might help someone else...
For months now I've been experiencing and intermittent numbness on the front of my thigh just to the top right of my kneecap. An area maybe 6" in diameter. It will go numb to the touch for a while, like it's had some novocaine injected but there will be a burning, or sometime a scraping sensation in its place. Comes on while laying in bed or walking... any old time. Nothing terribly painful, just mildly annoying.
I went for my annual physical today and mentioned it to my doctor. She said that it sounds like something called Meralgia Paresthetica. It's a (mostly) harmless nerve disorder common in construction workers who tend to wear heavy tool belts and can also happen to others when they wear tight belts or carry lots of things in their front pockets. I nodded and thought "I don't do any of those things... not sure if she's in the right ballpark here but oh well..." and then I went home.
Then just now... Duh!?!?!?!
This afternoon I was practicing, which I usually do sitting down... felt some numbness and thought about it some more, realizing that I had a 9 pound bass guitar resting on my leg right where the pants pocket is. I've been practicing a LOT more since Covid hit and usually do it sitting down. It sits right above the area of numbness for hours a day. Mystery solved! Feeling a bit silly that I didn't think of it at the time! Ah, how we suffer for our art.
