Mesa 400+ Preamp Tubes

Can someone explain to me the different functions of each of the 4 preamp tubes in the Mesa 400+? I just want to know what to listen for when experimenting with different tubes.

the pre tubes are numbered v1 thru v4 from right to left from the front of the amp... see attached

So V1 is the gain, V2 is the tone stack, V3 and V4 are the phase inverter and the driver?

Yeah pretty much, v2 also provides drive for the effects loop.
