Mesa Boogie M9 Megathread: Pt II

Yes the Attack is super fast.. Something that i prefer but it is full bodied and not lacking... I was talking with my friend about Mesa stuff.. I had an Mpulse years ago ( wish i never sold it) but we went bass gear hoping.. So my bud just got the walkabout after he and i demoed them together.. I still need to get one. The WA scout that is... But he also bought an M6 last week... There is something about a lead sled that just 'does it " sometimes..
I am going to rack this M9 up and its going one a few large gigs this week and next... I dig the headroom!

Oh .. I LOVE the RW jazz bass... I have two Uber 115s that i use all the time. .Sometimes i only need 1 if im on a club gig or on IEMs...
I want to try it with my old svt 810 cab though....

Im thinking of what mesa cabs to get for clubs and larger gigs.. I like modular so i can always scale up or down and sound the same.. 2 or 3 single PH 115s would be nice ill bet

My way of scaling up or down is to use two Epifani UL 1 cabs, a 210 and a 410. The 210 is 8 ohms and the 410 is 4 ohms.

This gives me a 210, 410, or 610 configuration with very similar sound. The 210 weighs 38 lbs and the 410 is 55 lbs. The M9 is perfect with either, though I have micros I can bring for long carries or rehearsal.

I heard a PH212 proto-type at Gelb Music several years ago. Ed Cagnaci, the bass guru there gave it a work out. I am pretty sure it would work for most anything, though it was pretty heavy. :smug:


I've always just assumed the 410 would kill, but mostly the 115s like yours are what I see around Denton.

Ive been experimenting with the pre sets.. When i had my M6 i used the #2 alot... With the M9 and my basses I seem to be favoring the #3 and #5 settings this time around. Super punchy and warm.. The bottom is full and gracefully surrounds teh mix will punching through too..
The M6 and M9 have such a nice midrange texture... It takes the notes and holds all their body without loss of tone.. I think that is unique to the Mesa line..

I love the 5 setting but I can really only use it on the biggest stages or when I have to play at a low volume. I'm in a band with 4 lead singers, so I can't get too carried away with all of those open mics. It always depends on the room. Sometimes I use the 2 with some mids brought back in and sometimes 3 with some lows added. Scooping is soo unsatisfying for me and I use a PH412, so mostly it's 4 or 5. I always use in ears, so I go with what feels good on my rear. 5 "feels" like a fast SVT to me. It can be a bit much for out front of house guy when we do theaters.

John..Thanks for the info the other day ...
Sunday was a weird indoor stage.. real loose sounding.. and ringy in the low mids no matter what...Even the drum Mon sounded washy... It was some nice gear too... Just a weird room/
I figured my best bet was to use one cab instead of two.. and it fixed it...
I do like the #5 setting at low vol too... its real warm and forward...
The passive Mid control really is a magical knob... There is alot of info behind that knob...
I want to like the #2 setting for live.. it just sound so round and big... Sort of works when i at home on a blues gig... But for me the #3 seems to be getting all the attention...

I have a three space rack bag that I want to load the M9 and a furman into. The location of the holes in the M9's rack mounts are not on the corners. They are closer to the middle. the only to even mount it in the rack bag is in the "middle" of the 3 space leaving a 1/2 space above and below it.

Is the rack bag unusual in the orientation of its screw holes or the M9???

If you look at this for every space there is 3 holes. top bottom and middle. I guess M9 wan't 2 middle holes and I have NONE...just top and bottom.

Can anyone submit a comparison Mesa M9 vs Shuttlemax 12.0. As much as I like the Max 12.0, I owned a M2000 back in the day and recently was recommended the M9. I also saw the 12.2 for some crazy low price new on eeebay, 595 I think.

Hi everybody,

Has Mesa Boogie worked out the "bugs" in the M9 ? I know there's more than enough posts on this but I'm curious to hear the latest. I'd prefer to do business with this local company. And I've got to hand it to them for their 5 year transferable warranty - other companies should be so confident in their products.

*Also, is there any mod that can be be done to the M9 to tame the Master Volume knob from getting so loud so soon ???
