Mesa Boogie Subway 800 vs EBS Reidmar 750

I had the Markbass 2x10 combo and the 102p cab about 10 years ago, and could´t stand it for more than 6 months. The Reidmar 750 and my new Neoline 4x10 cab is to me the perfect match IMHO.
<snip>

But is not that tonal difference 90% due to the cab and 10% to the amp? I have used the LMII since 2009 and it is fairly transparent, IME. Sure, my EBS 1V2 has a bit more "snappiness" and detail to the tone, but the difference is not really big, and is outweighed by the much more flexible EQ in the LMII.
Still, LMII in the combo and paired with the 102P might be a quite different story...

Haven't tried the EBS yet but just to throw a couple matches in the fire, I wouldn't shell out that price for something made in China, if it was Sweden made like the Fafner, it would be on my radar.
Mesa is made in CA, priced very reasonably. Got to give them kudos for that.

Gaz, by chance do you have experience with any of the Gallien Krueger MB series micro-amps? If so, how would you say the Reidmar 750 compares with the MB800 - especially in terms of voicing and tone, but also in terms of sheer power and headroom?

MM
Hi, use to own the mb800 fulsion and the regular mb500. Honestly, those are great amps but for the money and quality over all the ebs is in a category all on its on. What gets me about the mb amps is the DI. It's very noisy, while the ebs is studio quality worthy.

AlexanderB, I have to agree with Ursus. I hated my Markbass LM Tube 800 and LMII. No limiter, not enough power for larger gigs, no sweep mid EQ, super-sterile sounding, the VPF sucked bass tone and power at 340 hz, the VLE just made any cab sound like a 15" by rolling off the high end, and when it ran out of watts it just plain fell flat on it's face tone-wise and farted out, but I used them because they were light amps. Then I would go back to lugging the SWR around and shelve the MB after a month or 2. The Reidmar is a different animal. Plenty of power for even larger gigs, better frequency centers in the tone section, sweep mid, very nice compressor, a very nicely centered 'Bright' control that can pull down the 10k 'sizzle' without losing 3.5 to 6k 'treble'. I had the Reidmar 250 as soon as it was released, and it blew away the MB amps, tone-wise, even with less power, but the 750 added the power that many of us gigging bassists need to project stage volume over a hard-hitting drummer at gigs without in-house PA without sacrificing tone. I have yet to turn the Master above 10 o'clock. The Drive knob does, in fact, add liveliness as someone commented. I play clean but leave the Drive at noon and my basses get that little extra 'bite' attack I love when I use SWR tube front-end amps. I use the Riedmar with many cabs and get the same results. I run 2 of any of these cabs currently; MB 102P, Eden D-210XLT, SWR Goliath III, Goliath Sr and Golights. Each cab sounds different, but the Reidmar 750 clarity and liveliness comes through no matter which I use, though I like the MB 102P the least and only use them if I have a VERY small space on stage to work with. Admittedly, I will use my pre-Fender SWR SM900 to drive the Goliath SRs on extra large stages, but the 750 is what I use everywhere else (which is about 98% of my gigs). I also concur about the Reidmar vs MB DI; The Reidmar DI sounds super-quiet and sonicly accurate! FOH techs would ALWAYS run their own DI when I brought the MB amps. Not so with the Reidmar! I wish I had a dollar for every time someone asked me 'how do you get your bass to sound so good'! Because you are so experienced with the MB amps, you should give the 750 a try and let everyone know what you think. :-)

Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting a Reidmar 750 to accompany a Barefaced BB2. It seems like a well matched combination and I like the possibility of eventually adding a second 8 ohm cab and get even more sound when the need arises.

One thing I'm a bit worried about though, is the fan noise when using the head tot practise in the living room.
There is no info in the manual nor on the EBS website as to if it is regulated, or always on maximum RPM, and the reviews I read did not mention it.
Is there anybody who owns one who can chime in on this subject?

Thank in advance,
Ernst

Its been over a year, but does anyone know what the EBS 750 fan noise is like? does it only come on when needed?

Also - can you disable the compressor (not sure if turning it all the way down disables it). I have a Cali76 Bass Compressor, don't need a $10 amp compressor messin' that up.

thx all! trying to decide between the mesa 800(+), Genz 800, Phil Jones 600, the ebs 750, ?

I believe the fan comes on with the amp, but it is quiet. I can't hear it and I have checked. With the Compressor knob turned down, it is off. And no this is not a $10 compressor, it is actually one of the best on board compressors I have used.

Actually there have only been 3 amps that have on board compression which I really like, TC Electronic, Ashdown and the EBS Reidmar 750. But if you prefer to use your Cali76, just turn the knob off. I have only had the amp for almost a month now, but it has really impressed the heck out of me and is right up there with the Genzler Magellan 800.

Tone wise I can get the EBS to sound very similar to the Genzler by raising the Bass, Mid and Mid Frequency to 1:00 and leaving the Compressor off. The only difference is that the EBS will sound a little bit more vintage than the Genzler, but not by a lot and both will give you a very tight and focused low end with a lot of slam which not many amps can do. Both amps are great and I can't stop singing the praises of them.

You really can't go wrong with either and the only other thing I can add is that the Magellan has a dedicated volume knob for the Drive channel which is capable of quite a bit of distortion while the EBS does not and the Drive is much more mild in comparison. I use the Drive on the Magellan for effect on certain songs, but pretty much use the amps clean channel while I always use the Drive on the Reidmar 750 at 12:00 for some added bite. I have no experience with the Mesa or the Phil Jones.

Thank you for the long and detailed reply!
As a Markbass user for 9 years, but an EBS user for about 20 years, I recognize what you say.
For me personally, the VLE is quite useful for some songs, the general EQ points work OK etc, but the slightly veiled tone of the Markbass preamp (and the even more notable powersection compression) is apparent when compared to my EBS preamp + PA amp setup.
I will definitely try out the Reidmar 750 soon.

By the way, the Bright control cannot "pull down the 10k 'sizzle'"! It is a boost only control, and setting it at noon will create a sunstantial high end boost... But what a heck, even the "EBS endorsers" demo the amps in that setting!

I’ve had my Reidmar 750 for a few months and I think it’s utterly fantastic. Amazing tone and the build quality is top notch. I bought it used at a steal but even at street price I think it’s a fair deal.

I also found mine for a steal here on TB about 3 years ago. It's still covering my every need on stage and in studio. :bassist:

@ursus I get what you're saying. And I'm pretty much of the same persuasion: I dig the "beef". But not at the expense of clarity. It's the reason why I can't get my head around Ampeg. I've heard the Tonehammer, though never played one. It just didn't sound like anything special to me. I dig the high-tech TC Electronic features and functions - a lot. I just wish they hadn't made the choice to voice their gear for such an old-school vibe. As for the Mesa Subway, I'm getting the impression that it may not be my kind of thing either.

GK does it for me. And EBS. And SWR - though SWR closed down before the micro-amp rage ever began.

Amps are like Ice cream what I like you might hate sorta like how you feel bout Aguilar which is exactly how I feel bout gallien Krueger. I have 700RB that I can’t give away lol
