Mesa Boogie Walkabout Megathread; Part Two

No.
IME, neither of those are particularly modern.
I'd be more inclined to vote for the M6 if that's what you want.
Big, fat, clean, shiny on top...

The Walkabout is very tubey, is nice for adding harmonic content as you dial up preamp gain, and ends with a pretty true tube amp overdrive.

The M-Pulse 600 isn't as beefy by nature, tho it's eq lets you more or less dial that in. My M-600 did not have a crisp clean top end, and I couldn't eq one in to my satisfaction. I bought it hoping for a higher powered Walkabout, and it surely isn't. I didn't like it at all.

so when i say i like it more "funky or modern" the journey goes more in direction of the mp600 - i`m right?

Personally, I feel that if you need more than a 12+12 (or 15 in my case) and 500w on stage, then something is way out of whack. But, hey, that's just me.

good luck and enjoy that Walkabout

No I think your are right! I'm done with "Big Rigs". I judge every gig to my Santana Tribute band. Every time I show up to the gig I would get turned down on the PA because I would over power everyone (90% of this gig I have access to a PA System). The only way to get good tone out of a "Big Rig" is to crank it!(IMO) But in my book the Band comes first not ME! So in keeping with philsophy I would turn down somewhat disatisfied.

Then a revelation! I heard a recording of myself (Video) a couple of years back and I was surprised on what I heard! The Genz Benz Neox400-12T was putting out solid supportive low end! This was not a fluke. Heard another recording of a practice (again Video) and the same thing. But by the time I had realized what I had the Genz Benz was long gone:crying:.

Now Ive been on a quest. I have gotten rig of most of my major equipment (Eden 410XLT QSC power amp, preamps, I even sold my rare Mesa Boogie power amp to Tom B!) and I'm now down to a Buster 1x15 combo. Simple, elegant, direct and to the point but.... heavy. None the less this is my new "Big Rig". Now all I need is a rig for everything ells (restaurant gigs and rehearsals). So my journey has led me to Mesa Boogie and Genz Benz. I've owned both but I guess I'm wondering which will serve my needs. I know the Genz Benz can hack it but I'm so impressed with my Buster that I think I need to try out the Scout. We shall see.....

could be. pop the top cover, fire it up, tap on the tubes gently with a pencil or something.
if that makes an ugly noise, replace the tube.

---don't have the amp up loud, power down changing tubes, etc.

ah, i see - when i`m right you have both of them (walkabout and m6) - your answer is big help for me - i think i should really try the m6 - i don`t like push-pull potis and the footswitch connections but on the other hand big, fat, clean, shiny on top...sounds good to me :)

thank you very much

Hi guys,

How's the Mesa Hollywood store for stock...

is it like the local shops where they frequently have to order heads and cabinets... 6 - 8 weeks out.

or do they keep a decent stock.

I purchased my Mesa Rectoverb from GC new, but locally there's not too much Mesa Bass gear.

Thanks

They usually have a good stock and are more than happy to let you try anyting out.

They'll even offer to help you load it to your vehicle, which is the last time you'll ever get an offer to help load out! :)

has anyone ordered the case for the head? I've got a mesa walkabout earlier this year and am lovin it... but the whole package is a little awkward to carry all the time, being square and all (it's a 12). certainly much easier than other bass amps to carry, but i'm seriously thinking about just carting the head around for a while. is the case worthwhile, or would I be better off fashioning one myself out of a briefcase or something like that?

Thanks,

m

a bag... I thought it would have been a hard-shell case? I assume the bag has lots of padding?

Since I bought it with the combo, no bag was included for the head (although I did get a cover for the cab that would be good if I was moving it around in anything but my own car ;))

For portability though, the head looks like the way to go, as I think almost any decent cab will allow the tone of the head to come through (albeit the cab is probably pretty good... with the passive radiator etc)

Yep, I ordered my head case directly from Mesa ($249 + shipping), and I'm lovin' it. It is the exact same width as my Scout 12 cabinet, so it looks nice sitting on top, and I can use it with my existing 1x15 or 2x15 4 ohm cabs if I need more punch on stage.

While the head case isn't exactly light (it is built like a tank), separating the head from the Scout cab makes the cab easier to transport. I especially like having the amp controls facing forward, plus the head case obviously allows much better access to the rear panel...makes hooking up a line out to the FOH a lot easier.

As a new walkabout scout owner and other mesa owner i have a question for the crew. My e string distorts really easily at volume with the gain even at 11 and master at 9. is this normal, it seems excessive even for a "tubey" amp like the walkabout. I thought it might be the speaker although i can do it when hooked up to my GS410 as well. This does not occur with my titan which is somewhat "tubey" as well.

I'm waiting on a separate WA head (in case) and cab for exactly these reasons.

call mesa cs and ask them for suggestions.

i'm presuming you've:
made sure you battery in the bass is fresh, tried other cabs with the head, tried different cables at each position, etc.

Yup. The only bass that doesnt do it to a horrible degree is my sadowsky PJ. Even my reverend which is totally passive will overdrive it. Im gonna try another scout out at the store and see if theres a difference. I hope its a simple problem as I love my other mesa gear and have toured it for years without problems.
