Mesa Boogie Walkabout Megathread; Part Two

Well, thanks to you guys, I just sent the payment for a used Walkabout. :hyper::hyper::hyper:
I can't believe that in my 30+ years of playing I've *never* had a Mesa amp before! ...

Congrats and welcome to the club! Tell your wife that we love her too! :D

I came to know and love my Walkabout quite by accident...it was sitting in the corner of the bass alcove at GC and was priced to move during a List Sale. I figured that I could resell it, but once I got it home and plugged in, I was smitten!

For me, picking up a nice used AccuGroove Tri210L was the sonic icing on the cake!!!

In my mind's eye I am picturing a pair of WA heads to provide 600 watts into 4 Ohms or about 1K into 2 Ohms:hyper::hyper::hyper:. A rack would suck IMO, however, because only rarely would both be needed. I was wondering, however, if a WA head in a headcase would park properly on top of a 112 WA combo. Anyone know if this would fit and allow access to both front panels?

well, if you stack anything on top of the horizontally aligned WA combo, you will be blocking access to all of its jacks and controls. There is also the matter of the handle on the top and the little rail handles on each side of the panel.

I guess you could put 2 "risers" on each side of the combo and set the WA headcase on top of those. The risers would not need to be more than 2" tall. Seems overly complicated to me. Why not just rack 'em both and connect them to their individual cabs ?

I accidentally blew out my WA 15 cab driver. I had the gain at 2, the master at 9 and plugged my passive (but very hot) Basslab in with the toggle on passive. I had the parametric lows bumped at around 500Hz. I had been running a Radial PZ pre in front of it and that gain was up too high (apparently)-kaboom-now she rattles big time. Fortunately I had already ordered a new driver to change the cab from 8 to 4 Ohms....live and learn. The moral is that if you put something in series before your WA to get mute, tuner out and other features, watch its' gain or risk repeating my gaffe.

have you seen the pics of the bass player from Incubus (Ben Kenney) with his 2xWA+Scout 12 amp farm ... done in a deep wine red colored covering with cream colored wicker grills ... totally sweet looking rig. It's floating around here somewhere.

You could lay them on their sides and then stack them, giving you access to the controls.

Does the passive radiator have to face down?

well technically the physics would say no, it should be ok in any orientation, but I, and other WA users, have figured out that if you run the WA passive cab on its side, it does have a negative impact on the tone of the cab. Just seems to lose something.

There was some talk in the 1st Mega Thread about the (typical) physical limits of passive radiator designs. Of course, I seem to recall that the typical limit was that you could not point the passive radiator down, which is how the WA and Scout cabs are designed ... so what do I know ? ;)

so, what have we learned about passive radiators ? ... nothin'

me too...a complete accident...picked up a broken display model on clearance at GC and it's the best purchase i ever made. it just needed the effects loop jacks cleaned.

It's here and it sounds every bit as good as you guys said it would! The first few minutes were pretty disappointing because the active input didn't work, there was a loud buzz no matter what I did and the output was way lower than I expected. Then I ran a plug in and out of the effects and active input jacks and this sucker came to life and just blew me away! It's hard to get a bad sound out of it.
It's got the noisy Sunon fan so I'm going to try one of the Noctua fans and I'll report back on the results. It's got GT-12AX7-R tubes in it. Are those the stock tubes they used in the early models?
Based on the serial number, this must be a pretty early one. It's #23!

Hey WA club,
I'm looking at a either a WA head or a new Hartke LH500 for my roots blues gig and I was looking for impressions from folks who have played both. I play a P with flats and foam through 1 or 2 TL606 cabs with KL 3015's. My current head is my old 400RB, but it could be my backup if I love what I hear from these heads. Tone goals? Duck Dunn, Larry Taylor, Tommy Shannon... like that...
cheers,

cheers,

well, I'm all about old school tone (although the P with flats and foam is way beyond where I am at with my 74 Jazz :D) and I'd say go with the Walkabout for sure. I have had one for 3 years and am just as happy with it now as I was when I bought it. That's saying something with all the great bass gear out there on the market these days.

I have also had the chance to use a Hartke LH1000 (not the LH500 of course, but close enough) recently, and it does sound nice I have to admit. There is also no arguing its watts/price ratio. But, it does not do the old school/tube tone like the Walkabout does ... no where close really.

and you are right about coming on to the Walkabout Megathread Part II thread and asking which amp to buy .. whadjathink we'd say ?
