Mesa D800+ Limit Light on more than it should.

No expert here but I was running a very simular setting on an 800+ last night except I had the master at 3 o’clock and was very rarely getting a light (amber color?), even when digging in. I eventually backed off the master because it was beating my ass. We were out doors and I was playing a Caprice through a 212 berg which I had tilted back. Even my tone junkie guitar player complimented my tone. High praise indeed. Love the amp.

I have been wondering exactly how the voicing knob works. Are you saying that it is effectively a midrange cut knob?
As the control is rotated clockwise, the mid cut depth increases, shifts frequency and Q, while the lows and highs increase (and and shift)

Hey guys, sorry if this topic has been asked before. I own a Mesa D800+ head going through a Barefaced Big Twin II (1600W at 4ohm Barefaced Bass - Big Twin 2) and I’m getting the yellow limit light come on all the time when playing loud when not going through the PA and wondering if I have a fault somewhere either due to the head or the cab. My understanding was the cab could handle the head no problem and that the head was quite powerful. Any help or guidance guys would be helpful. I’ve attached a pic of my amp settings too, as you can see it’s not at full input or master volume. I’ve read about the limit LED in the manual but I’m still unsure and I’m worried about breaking something. The settings shown create a tone I’m really happy with so I’d be gutted if I have to change them to avoid this issue. Agedhorse can you or anyone else please help?

I had a Super Twin and a D800+ and had a similar situation. Long and the short of it was that as good as the 212s are, it wasn’t enough speaker some times.
Switched to the six10 and I’m happy.

I will come in and agree not enough speaker(s) far more than not enough amp. You could (and I know we all want more with less load in, but more speakers will (generalization but high %)) give you more volume at the same or even less amp output. Or try raising your cab a foot or 18” (45cm) so you can hear it better and back off master a tiny bit.

Or add another cab, of course ;)

Thanks, I think. I had been wary of asking about it because I do find a touch of voicing useful and did not want to believe it was like the Aural Enhancer on my old SWR SM400 in the eighties, which was effectively a tone-suck knob. They are obviously quite different since the 800+ voicing knob works for my purposes.
Sometimes I think a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. The voicing knob is effective. I am happy and do not need to know more....

Are you saying the 610 pushes more than the Super Twin? What 610 is it?
I'm asking as I'm interested in those Barefaced cabs but I wonder how they really push considereing I own two SWR Goliath III.

It’s a barefaced six10 and it’s a lot louder than the super twin. I’m still using my D800+. It’s also louder than the Ampeg 810 that’s in our jam space too.
I’ve never used an SWR cab so couldn’t say how they compare.

Ok, you chose the Barefaced 610. I thought it was some more "standard" 610 like Ampeg, Mesa, Fender.....
I have no doubt the 610 is louder than the Ampeg 810. Does it sound the same?

The six sounds different to an 810 but you can eq it in that way if you want. I personally want the low end extension and that’s one reason I chose a barefaced cab, the other being the weight.

Notes:
My bass is a Passive Fender Jazz.
The head is set to the 4/8ohm setting.
I’m not using any compression or limiter pedal/effect etc but interestingly when I engage an overdrive pedal the limit light doesn’t come on but the volume coming from the cab is actually louder.

Hi Leon. I’m also using the 800+, but combined with 2 subway 210 cabs@8ohm each. So I could expect the maximum output. However, when plugging in my active Fender Jazzbass Deluxe (n the passive input!!), I have to tune up my input till 13h and output around noon to get my sound into the stagemix. So, mine I sn’t too loud. Just the opposite of your problem..

With the 2x15 (3015 standard) I built, the amp never hits the limiter and there is more than enough volume. Master at 1 o'clock. Gain to suit. Deep and Bright on. Voice to suit.

With a single 15 cab, (and a few have been tried including a subway, GK, and Traynor) The amp had to be pushed into the limiter to keep up with the two guitars and heavy hitting drummer in my son's band.

You might need more cab.

PS - experiment with the HPF. You could probably turn it up to about noon with no ill effects. Also, try to get out in front of the cab, about 15 feet away, to see how it sounds in the mix. It may be that you're not hearing the cab because you're too close.

PPS - I have a Diamond compressor in the pedal chain that sees double duty as a very subtle compressor but also adds gain. Try boosting your signal into the amp but keep your gain low-ish.

Knob position can vary greatly depending on the pickups, setup and playing style. Forget anything about 12:00 knob positions, the knobs are designed to go well beyond 12:00 if necessary. It has nothing to do with rated output power.
