Mesa D800 without cab DI only

Hello Experts,

Is it proper to run the D800 without a cab ?
Using the DI out only ?

If this is true without a Cab, do I leave the Master Vol on zero, and just use pre-amp section?
The manual is a little vague on that.

I love the amp, and certainly don't want to hurt it.

I don’t think you need to worry about changing the master volume. I never have, will let wiser people chime in though.

I’ve used mine as a DI to record many times without a cab. The built in DI is great.

You don’t have to worry about the master level, it’s safe to run the D800 without a cab connected

No cabinet is needed, you can leave the master volume control turned down.

If you want to use the headphone output, you will need to turn the master volume up.

Green is good. In general, do class-d power amps have a standby mode that allows it to save energy if it is not being used? Phones do this.

I’ve done a few dozen gigs that way with mine, right or wrong.

I think stompbox DIs are popular these days, but one reason I don’t use one often is that it turns out they aren’t materially smaller than amp heads are.

Generally not, because if the amount is being used as a preamp/di, the power supply still needs to operate. The class D section draws very little power when not being actively used.

If the amp’s not being used, shutting the power switch off saves 100% of the energy.
