Mesa Subway 112 and 115 together

I used a Subway 115/112 stack on gigs for a few years. Absolutely loved that combination! I had the opportunity to try various combinations of the Subway cabs….115/115, 115/112, 112/112, 112/210, 115/210 & a 215. The 215 was glorious and for some reason sounded much better than the 115/115 to my ears. I just didn’t want to haul around the 215. The 115/112 was more practical for me to use in gigs and had a little more sonic diversity. As cool as the 215 was, the 115/112 combination was an easy choice for me.

Got a day playing with guitar and drums. I'm digging the 12 and 15 together. Cabs are very clear, and I'm able to get really good definition, thickness, and feel.
I'm using the Bass 800D, and WD 800. Both sounding killer.

An excellent combination that has a full low end with strong mids and a nice presence in the upper end if you want it. While not as big in the deep lows as a 2 X 115 combination, it is big enough to work well on an outdoor gig.

The 112/115 has been my go to rig since the cabs first came out. The 112 with 115 just gets you a slightly more mid biased overall sound that is in no way bass shy.

If you want enormous bass, the 2 X 115 combination is hard to beat. I just used that combination at a gig last week and it doesn't just fill a room, it envelops it. That said, in the same room last month the 112/115 came mighty close to doing the same thing using the Bass 800D. The mids were just a little more obvious as there was a little less deep bass and more upper lows/low mids (this is where the 112 is focused).

I did have the mid control at 2 (not 2 o'clock) on my Bass 800 D. Maybe it could be up a bit if I had two 15" cabs

I like the Mid control the Bass 800D in the 6.5 to 8.5 (actual number not clock face) range. For me the mid EQ on the bass 800D is a bit like an amp voicing control. I'm not someone who runs mid controls very high on most amps, but this head seems to really come alive with the mid EQ dialed up past 5 or 6.

I had to go look at where the Mid setting was on my Bass 800D (that of course, is perched on SW112 and SW115) and bingo, 6.5. LOL

That's hitting what I call the sweet spot on that head and IME is perfect for a 112/115 cab set, where that 112 is giving you some extra mid presence

I recognize most of you from other Mesa threads. In my quest to hang with the Cool Kids, I’m considering adding some Subway cabs. Either 2x115 or the 115/112 combo many have mentioned. I honestly think I could get by with 115 for most indoor gigs, but will want/need more for outdoors. Plus, my hearing not being what it once was, I like having the cabs 35” to 45” high, but don’t want to set a 115 on a 20” stool. We run everything through the FOH so I’m looking for a great stage monitor, but most of my sound will be coming out of the main PA. I’m wondering if the 115/112 combo creates any issues as far a the EQ goes? If money and size were no object, would I be happier with 2x115, or is that maybe overkill?!

I've posted a lot on this topic and have some early posts in this thread that might be useful.

The bottom line to my ear is that the 112/115 has a little less deep low feel and a bit stronger mid emphasis with an overall big sound presence. The 115 is a killer cab with a surprisingly nice top to bottom balance and full mid range given its deep lows. Doubling up on the 115's gives a room enveloping presentation especially in the lows/low mids and that is at any playing volume.

I've used the 112/115 outdoors and in huge indoor venues and it was fine. However, for really big bass outdoors the 2X115 set-up is hard to beat.

There is no better or worse here, just a little different voicing. Many of us like having the 112 for an easy to use cab in small venues and for limited space gigs. It takes EQ well and can get big sounding, but the 115 does that more naturally without needing much EQ. IMO the 115 is "the best cab" to have if you only choose to own one cab.

I've already commented in this thread but I'll chime back in to say the 115/112 has started going everywhere with me, even rehearsals. Part of it is just having cabs closer to my ear with a full stack, but also my current band has requested I bring it every time because they like the sound more than with my 115 alone. That was surprising to me, but these are so easy to haul around I say heck yeah I'll bring both every time!

I picked up a second single 15 Subway cab. Brings my situation up to two single 15" and one 12" SW cabs.
After playing through the combinations 1-15" + 1-12", both 15" together, and both 15" and th single 12" together I have come to the conclusion that they all sound great together. The thing about the two 15" cabs together I love is the different way the mids sound compaired to the 12 + 15 combination. I'm keeping all three cabs for differnt situations. I think the mids with the two 15" cabs has a different presence that I can't quite describe. It's still clear but has a certain thicker tone to it. Something makes me play a little differently. I dig it. Both settups will be used for sure.
