To some extent, yes, as far as out of sight, out of mind. I wouldn't leave anything in my trunk either
these days. It's better than inside the car, but still risky these days. I fit my two One10 Barefaced cabs, my
Genz Benz Shuttle 6.2 amp, two guitar stands, Access Carry gig bag and my cart all in my trunk for rehearsals
and gigs. I never leave that stuff in the trunk. It's sad this is where we are in the US.
Really sorry to hear about your stolen amp. I've had that experience and just felt really violated by it. Be sure to report it to the police and not a bad idea to let local music shops and pawn shops know about it. Really happy to hear you were able to get a replacement at a great price and I look forward to your gig report!

It doesn't ever really settle down. In 1976 I had all my touring gear stolen when the house was burglarized. Had to be someone who knew music gear because my Standel piggy-back amp was no lightweight and they also took my 1965 Jazz that I bought in 1966. I'm even pissed about my Shure mics they stole - a 565SD and 585. Worse yet, it put me out of gigging for the next 20 years while all my $$ went to raising a family. Actually, I still had a 12-string acoustic guitar and I sing, so I did play weddings and parties. But that's nothing like playing bass in a group. It still pisses me off 48-years later!
My first job in downtown DC, i had two tape decks stolen in three weeks. Got the bright idea to install a third one, all underdash, and i epoxied single edge razor blades along the back of the cassette deck. About two weeks later, i got to the car and it was a bloody mess. The thief slashed my seats and tires. The car was a beater, the insurance company totaled it. The smell alone was enough to total it. Bought another beater and a Sony Walkman with the money. Expensive lesson learned.
I had a new AV Receiver stolen from my porch. Found one on Craigs list, met the guy and bought it. Got home and compared serial numbers..... same unit. I went to the Sheriff, swore out a complaint, had the guy arrested, and took him to criminal court. This was before porch pirating was a thing.
Edit: The judge let him off easy, only had to repay me. About a year later I saw an article in the paper with him arrested for the same crime again. Probably did it dozens of times.

No veiled politics. I didn't say blue cities or progressive towns.
It's just the truth. Humans suck and can take a mile when given an inch. Nip that crap in the bud. I'm done living in places where junkies reign supreme. Even when I lived on a small island in Puget Sound we had small homeless camps producing hundreds of dirty needles, etc. All the crime that supports the habits became common place too.
I feel bad you all have to watch your gear so closely at shows. I would probably try and keep two folks together watching gear if possible. At least at vehicles. May not be a fair fight at that.

There was a guy in NYC the other day that decided to fight back against porch pirates. He crapped in a box, set it on his porch, and when the thief grabbed it he crowned him with a baseball bat. I told my wife about it, and she said- Wow…Thats going a little too far, dont you think? I told her Yeah, …I dont know that id have hit him with the bat….

I don't want to derail the thread but, stats sometimes don't really reflect lived experiences. They can be manipulated for any agenda. I was born and raised in LA area and bounced between the Seattle area for the last half my life. I hung with rough crowds etc. No stranger to jails and criminals.
I am amazed everyday at the difference of where I live now. I don't hang in Little Rock but go to Springfield and Branson MO. I have cop friends and talk a lot.
I would say Palmdale CA is worse than anything here. I wouldn't worry about leaving my amp in my car. Probably wouldn't have to lock the doors.
