Mesa Subway D-800+

Just ordered an 800+ today. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Cheers
Jim

Hope you dig it. I still have a tough time finding fault with it. I typically like to experiment and look for something a bit "more" but nothing on the amp front really gets me hot and bothered enough to drop down cash. Nothing I need to or want to fix at this point. And since I've been running the D800 (and now +) since it first came out, I'm pretty far past the honeymoon period :D

Had a question about live sound, and thought I'd drop it here since @agedhorse and others in this thread have a lot of experience.

So...our usual venue is a medium sized bar. Stage volume is halfway loud, like a lot of bar bands around here.

Vocals only in the monitors, a pair of slants at the front of the stage. Drum kit is miked. Line out from the guitar; DI from my 800+.

Stage is about 12 feet front to back, about 15 across. PA consists of a sub and a burly top, at both corners of the front. When I walk to the amp, my rig (800+ and two or three Subway cabs) sounds good. When I walk up to my mic at the front of the stage, it sounds different good. I figure there I'm hearing more of the subs.

In between there's a noticeable dead spot.

So...I was wondering whether there might be a phase misalignment between my rig and my signal in the FOH. And maybe it'd be worth trying out a Radial Phazer in my DI line.

Whaddaya figure?

Yes, this is common and if the sound guy can flip the phase on his mixer channel being used for bass, things should change. The alternative is to get a polarity flip barrel XLR connector, OR you can wire a short XLR cable so that pine 2 & 3 are reversed at one end. If you do this, mark the cable ;)

What do you think of the Radial Phazer (variable phase adjuster box)? Worth the bucks?

Not if it costs you nothing of a couple bucks for a cable that does the same thing without the additional electronics in the signal path.

Hi, I'm hoping you fellas (and gals) can offer some insight:

I play a GK 700RB-II and always feel like i'm fighting it to get the tone I want. I'm trying to get a solid low-mid "punch", but usually wind up with a high-mid "growl" instead. I've been playing this amp for a long time and I don't feel it's cutting it anymore for the sound I want. I've tried tons of cabs with it over the years and always have the same experience.

I'm now looking at other amps and am interested in the Mesa D800+, but can't try before buying as no stores in my area have one. Can you guys tell me if it's a good choice to get a more "Ampeg-y" type low-mid punch? I think most Ampegs are closer to the sound I'm looking for, but don't want to buy an Ampeg for reasons I won't discuss here.

For those of you who use the bright switch, how then do you set your treble control ? Also would appreciate some talk about the HPF/Deep switch interaction, for those of you who use both . Sorry if this came up before. I will be getting an 800+ soon.

When I set the amp with everything flat, I noticed it has less low end than my Aguilar TH 350. I compensate by engaging the Deep switch and then increasing the HPF to about the noon position. Plenty of bottom end that's not muddy. I set all of the other EQ knobs pretty much flat.

The bright switch boosts in 3khz-6khz range (I think its in the documentation) anyway, try the bright switch and then turn the treble almost off completely and then slowly turn it back up. It gives you a different EQ curve compared to Bright switch-OFF and boosting just the treble. I found this out by experimentation and found it useful for more clarity up in that region without it being too edgy.

Yes. Having owned and played both, a definite yes.
