is it worth the money? .. yes, if you like what it does .. and what it does, it does REALLY well ;)

I do have one and it's been my primary gigging rig for about 2 years. There is a very happy set of Walkabout users here so there are plenty of detailed and experienced opinions about this cool combo.

I think you're getting a bit confused by not knowing the terms well enough.

The SVT-CL is all tube, not tube solid or anything other term. In other words, the preamp section is tube and the power amp section is tube. They're all together in one cabinet-the head. So it's an all tube head.

The Mesa Walkabout head's preamp section is tubes and the power amp section is transistors (or solid state as it's now called) Don't worry about terms like MOSFET yet. Just do some reading up on what the basics are. I'm not making fun of you but it's obvious you just need to learn a bit more. Reading all the posts on this forum where all these terms are tossed about can be confusing if you don't know what they are, and to make it worse, some of the people using these terms don't really know what they mean either. Then you read some of the advertising hype that all the amp companies use and you really start to get confused.

By the way, and this is just my opinion, the Walkabout is the best marriage of tube preamp with solid state power amp I've heard. When I bought mine portability was the first consideration, but the sound just blew me away when I hit the first note and that's what sold me.

+1 to the above... 'tube driven' describes the Mesa Simulstate design, which has a preamp tube but then an additional tube right before the power section. As a result, these heads are IMO the closest that I've ever heard a hybrid design get to an all tube head... very warm, growly, fat, bloomy, etc.

It can get confusing when reading manufacturer descriptions of their hybrid amps when they use lines like "6 Tube Driven Power MOSFET’s". The first thing your mind sees is 6 tubes !!!. I've done it too. But a second reading quickly brings you down to reality.
For a thick tube tone in a compact package and without all the power tubes to maintain...nothing I've found beats the Walkabouts sound. Good luck with your shopping research.
