Orion is really good. Another good finger style player. He was actually guitarist in a band before joining Behemoth. I thought Behemoth killed it! Those guys sounded pretty tight. Where in NY are you?
Really badass thread. Made me remember quite a few heavies I hadn't thought about for a long time. My musical tastes are eclectic, almost weird.Exposure to whatever my family listened to growing up has been great. The sounds and bands that someone born in 1911 likes are vastly different than someone growing up in the 60s,70s,80s. Will be 40 this year. How'd that happen? Can't believe I am still alive sometimes. I had a great time 90s,thru 2007! Anyway, I am metalhead/thrasher at heart. My avatar tells the tale. Thanks to everyone for sharing.
I have pretty much the same story as far as being surrounded by a lot of varied music through my family growing up. I am 45, but still 17 in my head for the most part. Still play in a thrash band. Still have my jeans jacket with all of the pins and the Number OF The Beast back patch from high school. It still actually fits, and I wear it to gigs sometimes! I actually own my own home and have a GREAT 9/5, so all the people who would joke about me still living in moms basement can bite it!
I hate it that a lot of my friends who were metal heads ll fo the sudden "grew out of it" after college. To me, that is lame. It is true that I can see more of the childish aspects of some of the genre, but ALL genres have that. i guess it is cause I didn't get into metal for the rebellion and shock value stuff. I got into it for the music and - in the case of punk, the lyrics and social-awareness side of things. Case in point: I never liked Kiss. They were always a joke to me cause of the make-up and stuff, and their music bored me. Same think with a lot of the mainstream punk like the Sex Pistols and Ramones...too boring musically, or too obvious that the message was "made-up"
I am in the process of turning my basement into The Abyss (b/c as a good old punker/thrasher I would NOT EVER have a man-cave...too mainstream) and when that is done, all of my old posters/silk banners/memorabilia etc are gonna be out in full regalia...
Metal till we are all Dead!!!

The Metal scene has changed so dramatically, I am still stuck in the eighties lol, not the hair metal but the good poopie like Maiden Priest Ozzy and many more no disrespect to you drop tuners but this is what I grew up on.. steve harris and geezer butler taught me how to move my fingers fast without haveing to use a pick!
Indeed the change is huge!
Killer! lets keep it alive! this has to be one of my most favorite threads on Talk Bass no Dickheads I love it!Absolutely! I will be always proud (but not arrogant) to say that when my friends were chanting Disney soundtracks i was rocking Kill'Em All while i'm only 7 years old ))
Today i listen to different genres that have almost nothing in common with metal: acid jazz, house, gnawa, classical music...yet i'm treasuring my beloved bootlegs of Slayer, Sepultura, Death, King Diamond, Kreator, Iced Earth...
So yeah, once a metalhead always a metalhead!
yep easier to control your attack!Indeed the change is huge!
Of course if it wasn't for guys like Ian Hill, Geezer Butler and Steve Harris there would be no Rex Brown, Dave Ellefson, Cliff Burton, Alex Webster...
I'm stuck there too (early 80s/90s), i'm not the biggest fan of the super low tuned multiscale extended range bands even though i'm pretty tolerant and open for different styles...I don't use the pick either as i love the feeling of when my fingers touch the nickle strings, and of course i love the tone produced when using my bare fingers
Yes indeed i can feel the positive vibe, it's great ))Killer! lets keep it alive! this has to be one of my most favorite threads on Talk Bass no Dickheads I love it!
Yes there are newer bands that tune standard, the funny thing is that some traditional veteran bands go down tune year after year, i believe it's because the singers can no longer reach the high pitch of their prime time )))There are still a few modern metal bands that tune standard and contain bassists that play fast without a pick, though.Dan Briggs from Between the Buried and Me, for example. or Nick Shaw of Black Crown Initiate. I can understand where you are coming from though.
