Most of the metal folks i know are colossal nerds... as am i.
Like anything else, there are good, bad and in between for any group of people. No real surprise there 
What about Classical? It's what all the high-profile serial killers listen to.

it means "we found more than zero correlation". They'd probably have the same type of correlation findings from veganism vs omnivorism.
Sample pool size. For every hip hop terrestrial radio station there are at least five Christian stations and seven country stations. For every punk and/or metal radio station...
I'm not sure why this makes me think of this anecdote, but here we go:
Standing in line at my first concert & this Punk-rocker comes up to talk to us, asking if we slam-dance or mosh.
We didn't have a clue & said No.
About 3 songs in we're in the pit with that dude & he's grinnin' like he's sinnin'.
It was a great release, getting aggressive as Hell in there, but some took it too far.
Turns out that guy who started talking to us & goaded us into the pit wasn't even a fan of the bands we were there to see, he just wanted the adrenaline rush of The Pit!
Later-on people started doing the Wall of Death, which I thought was ridiculous, & around that time I nearly was crushed at a Slayer show.
So, I relegated myself to pogo-dancing afterwards, LOL!
Industrial music has some brutal pits, as well!~
Some days I'll be listening to Heavy Metal Jackie & something with a good groove will come on, maybe Slayer.
I want to dance on the damn ceiling, but what are you gonna do?
Heavy Music can be a great release for your tensions & aggressions.

Correlation is not causation.
While I generally enjoy the hell out of the more experimental and progressive forms of extreme metal out there, I generally loathe metal fans for their narrow-minded intransigence and misogyny. For example, I was at an Enslaved concert a year or so ago, where Myrkur was playing. Because I was wearing an Emperor shirt, people must have assumed that I was sufficiently "kvlt" to approach and make assumptions about. I had no less than four people randomly approach me at that show to tell me how much they hated Amalie Bruun, how she was "contrived", and how much they wanted her to die. All because she's an attractive woman unapologetically playing her own take on black metal.
For the record, she's a marvellous singer, has a great stage show, and writes beautiful music:
I love the expansive nature of heavy metal as a whole these days. It encompasses so many influences and variants that there’s always something new. I hate narrow-minded metalheads.
Never heard of Myrkur before. Definitely a cool song, and fits into some of the more ambient, “pretty” black metal like what Agalloch does fairly often. Will have to check out some of her other stuff.

I think every area of the world is a little different so I’m not saying this applies everywhere but I’ve played music over the last 20 years ranged everywhere from jazz to metal. And when it comes to the fans in particular metalheads are the nicest people by far. Metal gets a bad rep here on talkbass. It’s the subject of a lot of joking. but when my last band ended I had zero doubt what style of band i wanted my next project to be. And now were doing pre production for our first album. There’s definitely a few die hards but most rock and country fans in particular are snobs around here, they don’t care unless your famous and the tickets to see your band are $100 each. Live Pop and hip hop are basically non existent in my area.
The only bad thing I can say about the metal fans is that I dislike the association with heavy drinking. They sure like to party. But hey, it's their liver...
And funny thing: most of the first semester students at our university's Institute of Musicology are metal heads. Them people be nerds. Downside: barely any jazz afficionados to talk shop with...
