Metal Six String Players

Lemme know what bands I should be listening to that utilize a six string bass.

I got a six string Kiesel. Why? Because I always wanted one. Why? Who knows lol. I had a five already and an opportunity to make a custom dream bass.

I love it but I’m hoping people can point me to more bands that use a six. My fave genre is hard alt and metal. I prefer vocals I can understand but not opposed to some gutturals here and there.

So far I know Karnivool and of course Dream Theater but hoping people can point me to more.

Thanks in advance!

Steve DiGiorgio often uses 6’s, although not exclusively.

Oteil Burbridge is a good gateway 6 string player. I say “gateway” because he gets around stylistically and could appeal to a lot of people.

He came up in the North Mississippi/Southeast US scene and has played with Bruce Hampton, Govt Mule, North Mississippi All-Stars, Allman Brothers, and has a couple albums as a bandleader. He also plays in Dead & Co, which is probably where most people who don’t know who he is see him.

Not metal by any stretch, but an interesting player to listen to.

I think he should have been the bass player in Dave Matthews Band from the drop - I regret the decades of interplay between Oteil and Carter Beauford that we do not have.

I switched to 6 string in 1993 and never looked back. I was in a thrash metal band at the time, later playing everything from prog to folk to rock and even CC. Very versatile tool.
Like and play what styles you like, but the absolute best advise I ever got and took (other than learning music and theory) was to absorb as much different styles of music and bass playing as possible. It has made me a better player in every situation since. (Hint - Jazz is very helpful).
Lets put it this way, a guy like Ryan Martinie didn't become the player he is by just listening to metal.

Metal 6-string players who I think are worth checking out are:

Adam Biggs- Rivers of Nihil
Jared Smith- Archspire
Stephan Fimmers- ex Necrophagist
Jerone Paul Thesseling- Obscura (he plays a 7-string)
Adding (and +1-ing) Henrik Linder of Dirty Loops.

(I'm aware that some of these bands may not be the OP's style, but are still worth checking out. With Rivers of Nihil, their newer materials is more atmospheric with clean and growled vocals. Rivers of Nihil started out as more of a tech-death band but have evolved into a more proggy band).

And @kevrex That Stargazy Pie song was so cool. Shred-pop is a great description of that style of music. Definitely going to share that with people.

Boh. He's best known for being in Babymetal. Here's a clip with the Japanese Babymetal backband playing as the Kami band without the girls.

Yousuke from Octaviagrace

Yona from Paleneo

Miyu from Asterism (plays a seven string)
