Metronome suggestions?

My church band has lost its drummer. So we were thinking about using a metronome to keep the tempo since love to speed up and slow down!

Our thoughts are to rehearse with a metronome by putting it in one channel of the mixer and sending it through the monitors. Is that a good idea?

I don't know about metronomes since I have a cheap electronic non-digital one. Which ones do you recommend?

If you are willng to spend a little more, how about a cheap drum machine? Alesis SR 16 goes for about $150 I think - you can use it for click track, or premade drum riffs, or make your own drum tracks. You can pipe it through an amp or PA.

It's been my experience that a click track works in a live performance...if nobody really needs a click track.

If you're working in an environment where people don't have a good internal sense of time, they can be a disaster.

Shouldn't stop you from giving it a try though. You have something that goes click. Stick a mic in front of it and see what happens.

IMHO YMMV
