I don't have any experience with the Mexican Fenders but have to agree with Big Wan about the japanese models- I've got a couple and they kick butt! I picked up a 57 re-issue P from the mid 80s and it is a wonderful bass, it's got a bit of mojo and is easy to play because it feels like it has been well played in over the years. Have to admit I don't know what the stock pick-ups were like on it because the previous owner had put in basslines, but I wasn't complaining.
