Double Bass Mic preamp questions

I would like to know which features' has a microphone preamp-
And If it's generally advisable use a mic preamp with a mic in a live performance and why.
(of course, concerning our instrument and our typical necessities)

I am not sure I understand the question completely, but I can say that I use a mic into my amp blended w/ a pickup.

I've run mics into a D-TAR Solstice preamp which can accept pickups (1/4" cable) and mics (XLR). Then the blended signal goes from the Solstice into my amp. The features on the Solstice basically include for each channel: phantom power, 20 dB pad, three bands of EQ, 10 Meg ohm input impedance, clip indicator, and phase reversal. Plus a single mute button.

I've also gone without an external mic preamp and used a mic w/ an AI Focus 2R, which like the D_TAR accepts 1/4" and XLR inputs. The preamp section of the Focus services my pickup and mic in two separate channels, then sends them on through EQ, filters, and the power amp section.

First of all, sorry for my Eglish and besides for my scarce competence in electro-acoustical terminology...
I try to explain better:
What is the advantage of using a pre-amp microphone? How is the gain modified?
I just need a gain extension, but with the most natural sound.
In this moment my little mixer (which supplies even Phantom Power) seems not capable of doing this. Can you suggest me something more useful?
