Okay, I've been posting more in this forum lately because I've been saddled with doing the sound for my band and slowly building/altering/upgrading my PA system (it's my first one, I always played in bands where the PA was supplied). First of all, I want to thank everyone who has made suggestions and helped me with all my n00b questions (what may seem common sense to you is all new to me). Here's one for 'ya.
We have a new singer. Great guy, good tone, lots of control, high vocal quality. The problem? Very weak voice. Basically, he has very little power in his voice, it's a "light" voice. Which has lead to some small issues because we are a loud band. Our old singers all had very powerful, "big" voices and usually I had to run their gains fairly low and their input was only moderately turned up. That also goes for the rest of us, we all have much louder voices and have some power behind our vocals. I've been trying to dial the new guy in but I've run his gain way up and almost maxed out his input level and he's still moderately quiet.
So my thought is that I need to find a way to boost his signal, rather than cut all of us back. Again, we are fairly loud for a bar band, so I'm trying to figure out what to do (this whole sound thing is new to me). I talked to a good friend who is also a TB'er and he recommended that I look at something like this to boost the signal coming from the singer's mic (his recommendations are usually pretty good);

I know it's really cheap money and I realize you get what you pay for, but we have a show coming up very soon and I need to do something without spending a ton of coin. Plus, in reading about it, the thing could be useful for other things than vocals. As far as everything else, we seem to have everything dialed in for the rest of us, it's just........I need to make him louder. Just that one thing. Thoughts? Suggestions?
