James taught a lot of us in the D how to play, some personally, but for most part if you couldn't play his lines you couldn't get a gig in the city.
I know Ralphe Armstrong and Tony Newton also took lessons from Ralphe personally. Tony would tour Europe with the Motown reviews because Jammerson didn't like to fly, Tony's playing with Tony Williams Lifetime with Holdsworth is exceptional. I think James taught us how to groove. I'm sure there were other local players who took lessons or hung out with James. He casts a big shadow over this town. Anne Jammerson (James wife) has been a guest at every Detroit Bass day to my knowledge.
