Michael Jackson was really good

I'm not sure about Smooth Criminal, but from what I have read, MJ usually had lots of takes of the same bass lines on many different instruments (bass and synth), which were then mixed to create the tone he was hearing in his head.

Without a doubt. If you watch "This Is It", there's a part where Michael is working with his keyboardist during a tour rehearsal, and it gives the impression that MJ had perfect pitch. He was well-versed, regardless.

I never was much of a fan, but yeah, I do have to acknowledge his talent. The cover band I'm in decided to do 'Billie Jean' a while back. I wasn't enthused initially (understatement) but once we worked it out I will somewhat sheepishly admit that I enjoy playing it now. People seem to like hearing it in our usual spots so I guess we'll keep playing it.

Smooth Criminal was the last song I listened to this evening. Strange.

With an almost-eleven-month-old boy in my charge I've been slowly introducing him to a lot of my childhood (1980s) musical history. MJ's bad was today's lesson.

You definitely would not want to introduce an 11 y/o boy to MJ if he were still alive.
