This isn't news. But he really was very good. Great bass line in this one:

I kinda forgot his talented he was.

Interesting bass tone. It almost sounds like an acoustic.

I believe from past threads it's a synth.

Now my YouTube is bringing up all Michael Jackson stuff. Dude had range:
  6. The HIStory period (up to 1997 when this video was made) was probably his last period of true greatness. It was downhill from there.

But from the looks of the This Is It footage, he was intent on recapturing that success and about to bounce back strong.

How does a "great bass line" go to "kinda disappointing" because the studio musician who came up with the line decided it would be better executed on a keyboard over an electric bass?

It's my preference. I'd rather hear bass lines played on basses. It's still a good bass line.

I'm not sure about Smooth Criminal, but from what I have read, MJ usually had lots of takes of the same bass lines on many different instruments (bass and synth), which were then mixed to create the tone he was hearing in his head.

Without a doubt. If you watch "This Is It", there's a part where Michael is working with his keyboardist during a tour rehearsal, and it gives the impression that MJ had perfect pitch. He was well-versed, regardless.

I never was much of a fan, but yeah, I do have to acknowledge his talent. The cover band I'm in decided to do 'Billie Jean' a while back. I wasn't enthused initially (understatement) but once we worked it out I will somewhat sheepishly admit that I enjoy playing it now. People seem to like hearing it in our usual spots so I guess we'll keep playing it.
  15. Smooth Criminal was the last song I listened to this evening. Strange.

With an almost-eleven-month-old boy in my charge I've been slowly introducing him to a lot of my childhood (1980s) musical history. MJ's bad was today's lesson.

This is when MJ was at his best. Check out Wilton Felder's isolated bass.

  18. You definitely would not want to introduce an 11 y/o boy to MJ if he were still alive.

As a parent I find separating the artist from his art difficult. Some brilliant music, from a horrible monster.
