Michael Manring we need some advice

Hello my friend long time no see. I trust this post finds you happy and well.

Well once again its a dad of a musical son looking for a little advice. Alex is finishing up his jazz studies at the conservatory in Barcelona. (Hmmm sounds like fun huh?) Anyhoo, I was hoping that you might make some recommendations concerning the transport of his bass guitar to/from Barcelona. Not sure if it makes any difference but he's flying Swiss International Airlines from Chicago to Barcelona with a layover in Zurich.

The options as I know them are

1. Unbolt the neck, pack in a carry on style bag w/ laptop.

2. Unbolt the neck, pack in a checked bag w/ proper bubble wrap, etc.

3. Have the bass packed and shipped (FEDEX/UPS)

I would prefer option one as I wouldn't want some baggage handler to help himself to a bass and then have to argue with the airlines and/or insurance company. (Yes its insured but by the time its replaced who knows how much hassle and or time has gone by and he needs his instrument for his studies.) But I'm concerned about the size dimensions for international travel and whether the bass (Fender p bass) would meet the specs for carry on baggage.

Michael, I know you've done much traveling w/ a bass guitar and am hoping you would give us some advice.

Pedro
