Michael Vick pwned!

Yup, this is exactly how I see it: Dogs see us as "one of us" (i.e. the pack, specifically you, the human, are typically the "alpha" dog). They intrinsically TRUST us.

Subverting this trust and causing harm to the animal for the sole purpose of some sick, perverted, and twisted version of "entertainment" is abhorrent to any rational and civilized human being. If it's "cultural", then your culture SUCKS. I recommend getting a new one, post haste.

Vick has shown a consistent and blatant disregard for the law throughout his "career", and it finally caught up with him. He managed to skate through many scrapes prior to this one, so his behaviour is no surprise to anyone that was paying attention. He probably should have been at the very least suspended numerous times but was given a "pass" because he was MIKE VICK for gosh sake, and he's brining in a lotta dough, for both the Falcons and the NFL. It took a major felony to finally get everyone's attention.

Sadly, as I pointed out elsewhere, this simple fact - Mike Vick is an admitted felon! (and only because he was cornered by the facts, I'm sure he would have still been spewing lies and obfuscations right this moment if the pure facts had not painted him so perfectly into said corner) - seems to escape all too many NFL players and fans, as evidenced by the actions and clothing seen at the game Monday night. :scowl:

Also, Vick is a certifiable MORON, whether by choice, circumstance, or some other reason. Any idiot would have been able to add the 2 and 2 to end up with 4 when as part of his release until sentencing the judge made random drug testing a condition of the release. Uh..."I was under a lot of stress...uh...." ain't gonna cut it, hoss. You KNOW they're gonna hit you sometime, if you have even the slightest bit of basic logic and intelligence at your fingertips, you DON'T smoke the joint! :rollno: However, what this almost certainly points out is that he STILL believes that the "rules" (or more correctly the LAW) only applies to guys that don't have his physical skillz.

For those that think his sentence is too much: Wrong. He committed a felony. He lied, both under oath and otherwise, repeatedly about the felony. He then broke the conditons of his pre-sentencing release. I'd say that under those circumstances, the judge was pretty lenient - sentencing guidelines allow up to a 5 year sentence, he won't serve half of that, even without any good behavior early release.

Comparing this to any other issue is a straw man argument, the issue is that he committed a felony, got caught, lied through his teeth, and got a pretty darn light slap on the wrist for it, when you look at it. The type of felony, and the fact that other felonies are worse, or that other perps get lighter sentences for greater wrongs just tells us to get off our collective arses and get those that we hire (by voting, you do that, right? No? Then please STFU about how the world ain't run right!) to write our laws to get it straight - not to sit and type on the internet about how "unfairly" Vick got treated.

Stupid should hurt, and it DID this one time. Hit him right where it would have at least a moderate affect on his brain, in his wallet. Let's see if Mikey can get out and learn to live in a world where he isn't "Michael Vick, superstar football player". I doubt he will do well in that world.

Gard, you sound like the one making a strawman. Nobody I read who said that they felt Vick's sentence should have been lighter said he was innocent of anything. I just don't see what he did in the same light you and others do. I do not see dogs as one of "us." They are animals, not family members. That said, they did not deserve to be abused, and Vic deserved to be punished for what he did. I just think the degree of punishment should have been less.

And where did our pal Joe get this information regarding prison sentences from? Did he cite those sources? A quick search finds, Invalid Link Removed the charges for child molestation, [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] and the charges for animal cruelty (in NY for example) are, "a class-E felony with up to 4 years in jail."

And a quick read of the quote might miss the fact that he didn't say "average".

Just sayin'
:D

Everyone knows that Vick is getting out of jail in less than a year. He's a celebrity. Our legal system is far kinder to those with money than to those without.

Based on what? What I've heard so far is that he'll have to serve at least 85% of his sentence... unless of course he gets a really big celebrity to commute it.

I do not "relish seeing a millionaire athlete get[ing] knocked down to earth," as you say, but I take great offense to courts going easy on celebrities that commit crimes and do not pay the time.

And Joe took great offense at some other sentences he'd seen.

What exactly are you trying to rationalize? That killing an animal, no matter what fashion, should be punishable in the court of law?

If that is the case, there is a massive difference between engaging in an illegal activity (dog fighting) and one that is legal (hunting).

Do you seriously think people have a problem with Vick because of the "legality" of the issue? There goes your massive difference.
:)

I personally would not engage in hunting an animal, but I do not think that it should be a punishable offense. I am sure tons of people can post relevant articles to the merits of hunting for both subsistence and sport, so I'd rather let them do it.

This thread makes me sad.

What merit does sport hunting have? It's still a pleasure killing... and you'd rather let them do it.

Dogs love humans and trust us as their pack leaders. Dog fighters betray that bond and that trust at the deepest level, just like a child abuser.

Wild animals fear us just as they fear their other predators. They expect nothing more than what they sometimes get from us... an invitation to dinner. :)

And that's why people hate Vick. I'd say wow but I have no doubt that many people think exactly like this... Michael Vick betrayed his bond with dogs.
:)

What's really funny is how many heinous things dog lovers suggest doing to cats. Guess there's no bond.
:D

Apparently both of us missed a few things that others seem to have seen in this thread.

:hmm:

i still don't get it all.

it's a crime to have dogs fight each other.
but we all pay to watch grown men beat the hell out of each other.

That's different because it's voluntary... it's not like any of them were coerced into it or didn't have other options.
:hiding:

Face it, folks... man by his very nature is violent. The fact that so many people refuse to see any similarity between animal cruelty and killing for s___ and giggles is telling. They both boil down to doing whatever you want to another living creature for no other reason than your amusement.

For anyone unaware of people who kill for the rush, Google is your friend. I seriously doubt the hunters who are killing to feed are the ones keeping taxidermists busy.

They do it because they like it.

And for anyone who underestimates man's capacty for inhumanity, read a frickin' book. It's not exactly hidden information.

I'd have to agree with that.

However, farm animals are killed for food. Hunters kill animals for sport. Killing for sport is the sign of a sick mind and those people are no better than Michael Vick.

For the first time ever, I completely agree with Dave Grossman. Not just this post in particular, but his stance throughout the entire thread.

Dave, it is rare that you and I agree on anything, but on this, I agree 100%.

Now, when you say permanently, are you thinking of capital punishment for some of them?
It depends on the crime and whether they want to live or not. If they want to live, give them capital punishment. If they want to die; life in prison. That'll learn 'em!

I'm a victims' advocate. Too many people seem to think that a criminal's rights are just as important as their victims. Often times, the criminal gets better legal representation than their victims do (provided that they didn't kill their victims).

Violent crime is a plague on this planet. Removal of violent criminals from society will, at worst, keep them from hurting additional victims and, at best, serve as a deterrent. Instead, violent criminals are routinely let out of prison early and often commit the same crimes or worse. Why should society face that risk? (rhetorical)

Good point. I've seen dog owners/lovers turn their dogs loose on a cat before, and take delight in how the dog(s) rip the cat to shreds.:hmm:

@$$holes.

I'd likely beat the crap out of a person that did that. The dog should be humanely put down, as it will never stop that type of activity once it thinks it is acceptable, and it may eventually turn it's blood lust onto other creatures, or worse young children.

People coercing dogs to perpetrate violence for their enjoyment are not human in my opinion.

And no, I'm not a PETA member (unless it stands for People Eating Tasty Animals! :D ), on the contrary, I have hunted and fished for food all my life. But a wild animal sees a human as a threat, and rightfully so; a domesticated dog sees them as a family member (pack/family - same thing to a dog), and trusts that human. Abusing that trust is my issue, and that trust between the dog and the human exists, regardless of how the human feels. As a human, we have a RESPONSIBILITY to treat our domestic animals with care and kindness (yes, even the pigs, cattle, and chickens we eat) at all times, as they rely upon us for their well-being while in our care.

Sorry Brad & Doc, but Mike Vick betrayed that trust, did so in the most heinous of ways - for his own pleasure! - and deserves at a minimum the sentence he received, more would have been quite justifiable in my book.

If "betraying that trust" is a crime...
:hmm:

I'm talking reality, not the clouded picture that many people who have an affinity for animals work in.

I like animals but sometimes people take this too far and think that others should think that way too or be held to that standard. A dog you don't know doesn't trust you. I can't imagine Vick had any trust with his animals. I know many people who hate dogs and as such have no trust to betray.

I don't get what the apology to me was for, did you have the impression I had a problem with his sentence? I don't. Or is it that I don't buy into the betraying the trust thing? That's an individual thing IMO and has nothing to do with Vick.

BTW there's nothing kind about the way we kill the livestock we raise for food. That has replaced hunting for many of us and it is what it is.
