Double Bass Micing with a bass amp

Yes, I cut the wires and soldered them to a standard 1/4" jack. Then I took a piece of sheet metal and cut it down to size, drilled a hole it it, and bent the sides to snap onto the strings, similar to the type of jack used on many pickups. Works great. Here's a photo, although you can't see the connection to the jack itself. The other jack on the left was for my former pickup, which has since been removed and sold.

Do you ever have issues with the clip buzzing?

Edit: the tie clip in the f-hole I mean, not on the strings.

Sorry, I haven't been online for a few days. I've been using the RS mic with the same setup for about a year and a half now and I have never noticed any buzzing or vibrations, other than those that are supposed to be there. The thickness of the bass top is barely as wide as the clip opening, so there is little chance of it moving or vibrating in any way.

Used the RS mic at a rehearsal yesterday. The first hour I used the FDECK HPF. I thought I would give it a try without the HPF . When I took it out of the chain I just rolled the lows off a bit. It sounded quite good. It was nice to have just the mic between my bass and the amp. I have 6 gigs in the next two weeks in a duet with a guitar player who plays everything from an old Gibson acoustic to a National to electric. Will report back soon. My little Eden set up sounds quite surprisingly nice.

Well, I ended up using the the mic only last weekend. Friday night guitar player was with a resonator and a mic thru a small pa with vocals. Saturday the only difference was he was on electric. Both nights the mic sounded great on the Kay. Both rooms were very different acoustically. I was very impressed.

Have you still been using the RS mic? If so, How has it been working for you? Been using mine for over two years now with wonderful results.

Well I couldn't help myself. I got the radio shack mic. I'm gonna try DI'ing it this weekend at a gig through a pretty good PA setup. I'm still bringing all of my piezo stuff just in case.

So I've gone....full circle, bass max, AT Pro-35, back to bass max, hurley virtuoso, and now the RS mic. I have a problem.

So far I've also had good results with the RS mic. I ran through a sansamp BDDI, then DI'd to the PA. It worked out well, but I really need to get out in front and some else play my bass. All I can hear is what I'm getting through the monitor mix. No feedback issues though. I just shoved into the f-hole on the the treble side with some foam to keep it snug.

Ha! I was once like you. I ended my search with an eap and an atm450, blended together. Phatnessssss! woohoo!

Still have the rs mic in my bass bag.

OK three gigs down with the RS mic. Results have been good, though I have to peg my preamp to get enough signal to the PA. I may try one of my small amps in conjunction with the DI to see how it works out. Feedback has not been an issue yet. If I continue down this path though, I will have to fabricate a better mounting option for everything.

For 30 bucks though, it's worked better than an AT Pro-35 I got rid of....which seems bizarre to me.

edit: It's worth noting that all three gigs have been outdoors, which IME has cut down on feedback related issues in general.

As a precautionary, you may want to cut a few foam inserts for your ffs in case you do get feedback problems and keep a tennis ball or towel in your bag too to place between the tailpiece and top. This will give you options to address problem rooms in case you do get feedback. A mic inside a cavity can create feedback easily. These things are I ever needed, once I slimmed back on damping measures where I went overboard, to combat feedback. My bass is really really resonant. I usually only need a f or both foam inserted to take care of bidness!
