Can't vouch for the Bacchus but I've heard good things. If you play rock/metal I'd go with the Spector, they always sound a little more aggressive to me. The 55-01 is a great instrument, too, though, and I actually like it better, just think the tone on the Spector is better suited for heavier stuff.

Honestly, I would get a Yamaha TRBX505 if you're looking for a good active sound.

Plus it's switchable to passive if that's your thing. My 305 is the most comfy of the dozen or so basses I have, and I would expect the 505 to be quite similar. The B is quite solid, even though it's a 34" length.

A Yamaha bb1025. Even a bb425 will make you smile and feel awe.

BB425X is pretty hard to argue with at that price point. It was the only 5 string I found that didn't mush out.

Perhaps to you, but I'm pretty sure that that anywhere in that 500 to 1000 range would seem like midprice to many people, me included. I would consider low price under 500.

Well, it's not like I'm rich - but I've played a range of basses in my life, and in 2016 dollars, anything under $1000 I'd consider "Cheap". To me, a mid-range 5 is $1500 - $2000; high range, obviously, being over $2K. You do get what you pay for.

I got my Lakland 55AJ for $885 with a hard case and Aguilar HC Pups in it and can say that it is the best purchase I've ever made. I don't see them come up too often but when they do they are usually for a good price, at or below $950. Worth every penny and then some.

Can't recommend the sire v7 enough. Especially after i put a set of Aguilar 5 string hot pickups in. The bass is incredible and the pickups make it sound insane.

I honestly prefer it to my g&l L5500 and I thought nothing would replace that

No worries - these are reasonable observations.

I just think what a decent five string cost before everyone started shipping their manufacturing to countries which have no labor or environmental laws. No, I do not begrudge any company anywhere from making any thing, but I it really bugs me when US names like Fender, Lakland and G&L do this, thus obscuring who is actually building their instruments to anyone not savvy enough to know... So those instruments are, for me, off of the table.

But to address the OP's main question: If you watch the TB Classifieds, you can find some very nice 5 string basses for good prices. Get a standard Zon Sonus 5 or EBMM 5 for around $1200 (or less) and keep your resale value.
