Double Bass Mid Range - Getting it Right

My setup is an Englehardt EM-1, K&K Bass Max pickup, Radial Engineering Tone Bone PZ PRE preamp through a Genz benz shuittle 6.0 12t
Both the Genz Benz and the Radial preamp have similar two knob parametric mid range EQ setups. For both I find that setting the level at 12 o'clock or zero cut/boost with the frequency rolled all the way to the left (lowest Hz setting) gives me the best tone. Any time I try to adjust the mid range controls from there, the tone is either tinny or tubby. I can live with what I've got now, but would love to add more mid range definition while keeping the tone warm. I guess I'm a dinosaur. I can comprehend and use a graphic EQ with sliders, but parametric mid range EQ baffles me. Any suggestions?

ACTIVE EQUALIZATION – The SHUTTLE 6.0® contains an active 3 band equalizer with sweepable parametric mid range frequency control. This equalizer, similar to those found on professional sound consoles, is a very useful tool. The low frequency EQ section is an 80 Hz shelving curve with 15dB of cut or boost. The high frequency EQ section is a 4 KHz shelving curve with 15dB of cut or boost. The parametric sweepable-mid frequency section features 15 dB of cut or boost with a bandwidth approximately 1 octave wide. The center frequency of this filter is continuously user adjustable from 150 Hz to 2 KHz with a single control. This filter is typically (but not always) used to reduce or remove offending frequencies in the instrument’s pick-up response, or boost response to achieve a particular voicing. Spend some time experimenting so that the process becomes creative as well as corrective. Note that our active equalizers are very wide response and a little bit can go a long way.

3-Band Semi-Parametric EQ -This three-band semi-parametric EQ is shared between the two inputs. HIGH and LOW are shelving type EQ and adjust the treble and bass response. The sweepable midrange EQ uses two controls: MID controls the amount of boost or cut, while FREQ sweeps the frequency spectrum.

I haven't had positive results any time I've tried boosting using the midrange knobs on a GB amp. The mid EQ works better for cutting on upright bass rather than boosting, IMO. That said, you may want to look into the FDeck HPF. You don't really need it as a buffer for the amp, but you can cut out some of sub-low/rumble from the tone which will then led the mids be heard more clearly.

When the frequency and and gain knobs are both at noon, this essentially isn't doing anything to your signal other than passing it through the circuit.

If you just want to use the amp, set everything flat and then back the lows off gently to about 10:00 and turn the overall volume up to see if that gives the desired results.

I have used a Shuttle 6.0 and a Shuttle 3.0 at Webster University, where I often do rehearsals. Just like you I don't boost the midrange frequencies. I find that using a Headway EDB-2 into the Genz Benz 3.0 allows me to focus
midrange definition, and improve the overall warmth. I think it's because it has independent Low and High Midrange Controls. With my bass, single band midrange controls don't give me the EQ I need. You're not a dinosaur, Graphic EQ is much easier to work with, because it visually makes sense.

I've also found that excessive eq stages just serve to mess to the sound. I have active eq on my bass, and a pre in my amp, so why would I need an outboard pre as well? I start with my bass flat, and work with the amp. If I really need it, I can adjust with my bass.

I've never heard of a Double Bass with active EQ built into the instrument, are you talking about an Electric? This is the Double Bass side of Talkbass. ;<)>
