Update: For those who responded, thanks. I have decided to take the job and will begin on January 30th. I'm going to stick with gigging with the band and we're just going to see how it plays out. If it interferes with the gigging schedule then I'll have to put the brakes on. I'll be starting my home inpection business here in TX this next year too and hopefully I can pick up some business going into this spring. The contract is for a year so if all goes well with home inspecting I won't have to renew next year. We'll see how it all goes and thanks for the support.

It's pretty clear to me you can't keep doing the band if you take this job. You'll put your relationship with the band at risk, and the relationship with the pharm company at risk. This is one of these situations where you have to choose.

I know it's hard to give up the coin from the band, but sometimes, your work takes precedence, and it seems like this is one of those times, unfortunately.

Good luck -- I hope you can make it work. It sounds like it's going to be really hard to juggle both responsibilities, but at least you aren't burning any bridges for the time being. You will learn soon enough whether this dual arrangement will actually work. Keep us updated!!

This is a similar issue as we will have with our singer for 2015... he has to work (be on-call and be on-site at various locations if called in) one weekend of each month. He's set that up with his work as the 2nd weekend of each month.

We'd love to have gigs on those weekends (we're pretty booked thru May already) but simply cannot risk him not being able to get away for gig time, or get called in the middle of the 1st (or any) set and have to leave. Subs are not an option for us.. so.. we have left those weekends un-booked. Sux.. but.. it is what it is.

I have a one year old son and had to get my first ever "real" job as I've been playing for a living my whole life. Now I do all 3 things (dad, music, job). I wouldn't be able to stop playing music all together, however if I had to choose a specific gig/band or the job that lets my son go to the doctor and do stuff like , you know, eat, then I'd be thankful for the easy decision.

The only consideration. I would make (if you have other employment opportunities) is if the gig income Will be missed too much.

I wish you luck. But there seems to be a lot of potential for conflict. Keep your priorities in order, be prepared, and know that the band will probably have to take a back seat. This is not only a "day job" that you are responsible for, but perhaps lives as well. Consider everything carefully, have your procedures ironed out in case you do get that call in the middle of a set. All the best.

Would there be any way to transition into a studio player if you end up unable to continue with your band? Might be a good way to keep some cash coming in from music...

Hey gang....once again thanks for all the responses. Just to be clear, before I moved out of So Cal I did this as part of my regular job for a good 3 years. Originally I would have to take the emergency call, deal with the customer, drive the 15 minutes to our office, pack the medication, wait for the courier to pick up and then finally lock down our Fort Knox type building and head 15 minutes back home. Now that I'm "remote", I have less to do and more options. I will now be able to use my work phone as a mobile hotspot for my computer (couldn't do that before) and now I will just be speaking to the customer, place orders and then hand it off. I have also been looking at the on call log book and the trend has looked very favorable for Friday and Saturday nights. Everything is flown commercial air too so there are often several hours of down time where things are just not moving either. I know I was talking about life saving meds earlier which is always part of the equation but a lot of these calls are for patients who need some sort of regular scheduled treatment and for whatever reason the hospital just didn't have it in. Im pretty confident it will all work out in the end, but there will probably be some rough spots along the way.
