Mike Gordon- Best Bassist ever?

Hey, it's called an opinion. It's what he thinks. Next time he needs for someone to bash his thoughts (without even knowing him or his ways) you'll probably be right up there.
How much phish have you listened to? How much LIVE phish have you listened to?
(Not trying to criticize yor opinion here, it's just that i've never heard anyone say something like that)
i've listened to my fair share of phish. i am no stoner, so i can only take so much. my opinion of the group, is this: they as a musical unit do cool things on occasion and have some decent songs, but if you single out mike gordon, he just doesn't impress me. plus he plays a modulus with a pick and loses major points because of it.
yep, and maybe you should check out some Jeff Berlin, Chris Squire, Jimmy Haslip, Stu Hamm, Adam Nitti, Victor Wooten, Rocco Prestia...do I need to go on?
I have to agree.From what I've heard both Mike,and Phish have okay chops but niether one of them didnt really have a groove going on long enough to hold my attention
Neither is my girlfriend or quite a few friends of mine, but they still love Phish. Just because the music is associated with such practices it doesn't mean that it can't be enjoyed on any state of mind
I respect your opinion fully, as many people have told me similar things

If this was in any way directed at me, I can proudly say that i've listened and in some cases still listen to all the bassists listed above. Funny thing is that I find many of them quite boring. But that's just my opinion.

Hey thats funny! Maybe you should try to smoke a j sometime and listen to some phish! Music is like food when you get high! Everything is just so much better! It opens your mind up. Every time i go to do studio work or jam live i always smoke a big j! But i will say that drinking and playing live isnt the best idea in the world! Pot opens youre mind and doesnt create problems playing. Booze will make you think youre mind is open and you r great. But we all know the truth there! I do like phish as a band and he is a good bass player. But i wouldnt say he is awsome. You wanna listen to a great bass player that can jam like no other listen to some bands like deep banana blackout or john scofield. The yellow jackets r wicked as well. But then again what do i know i have played bass for 20 years and have had alot of success. But i smoke pot! So maybe its all some fake stoned dream. But i have to say that my fav thing besides playing stoned is going to a small jazz club high and getting into some great jazz. I am not saying that i think everyone should be high all the time but at the same time you need to relize that some of the best music ever written was helped a little by pot!

And before anyone slams me for that i would like to let you know that i was stoned with victor and his brother in st.louis eating nachos. Hehe it was great. Next time you see them live check out future mans eyes! He is one of those guys that can not hide the fact that he is stoned! He looks like he is bleeding from the eye balls!
And I also have an opinion...it is what I think. With all due respect, I am not "bashing his thoughts". He asked a question in a forum and he got my answer. Best bassist ever??? I'm sorry, but he must be high if he believes this.
To say this guy is the best when there are other bassists out there like: Victor Wooten, John Patitucci, Marcus Miller and myself 
is a pretty bold statement to make. Ive heard the guy, he's decent and does his job better than some, but not as good as others. That of course is just IMHO

The point is it is a euphemism....like "he must be crazy....he must be out of his mind, etc". Sorry if this upset you. Peace.
I think he is a good musician, but not such a great bass player. Neither he nor Phil Lesh seem to care much about bass qua bass. Which, OK, that's a nice artistic position if you're trying to be "interesting" and stretch boundaries. But the bass parts I've studied by these guys are not happenin', not groovin', not smokin', etc... Often, they are very interesting, subtle, clever, tasty, and so on.
I will never judge anyone because they do, or do not, take any kinds of drugs. It`s your life, I have no right to judge it. Besides it`s way off the topics of talkbass.
But I think you should avoid such statements on this kind of forum - mind that 13, 15 year old musicans reading this...
k, can i just say, i havent even heard of half the guys mentioned here, so maybe my opinion is some what limited...
but how come no one has mentioned Stuart Zender of Jamiroquai?
i mean as far as variation and experimentation on record goes ive never heard anything like it. the guys playing is so funky, and uplifting, and u can tell this guy means business when he picks up a bass, and hes not afriad to try new voices, or distortions,
ive only just got into him, but i can tell this man is gonna rule my life for a very long time.
serious go to amazon, they're selling the first three albums for 19.99 and its so worth it.
and im with whoever said it earlier, can we not go at people with our opinions, and not restrict someones view.

Ahh pot is the only drug i take! I dont even drink. I care alot about my health so i stay away from that junk. And as far as 15 year old kids reading this they should be old enough to make up there own minds by now. Dont do anything just cause i do!
I have pretty strong knowledge of each of these, and a lot of knowledge of Vic. Mike Gordon is in fact in the same league as these guys, however. Different styles, all of them, but you cannot discount Gordo's extreme musicality, knowledge, and groove in the midst of some pretty varied types of music.
Is he the best ever....no. But there's not a "best ever" and never will be. How inane to think that any one player is "the best"......

Thanks for saying that. I cant stand it when people say that. How would one go about choosing the best player of anything? It would be as hard and stupied as trying to figure out who the best football player is! First you would need to split everything apart like position or musical style. But music goes so much deeper than that. Then you would need to seperate what that player did in that style. From bieng original to slap finger thumb styles. Then you have show off styles and smooth to jam band styles. I would have to say that mike gorden is one of many best jam band style players. But there r so many jam bands out there with awsome players that r just as good as mike!

You can rank anything you want. Yes, it's hard to do right, but thoughtful analysis of statistics makes it relatively easy to declare a best football player.
To declare a best at some purely artistic activity is harder, but there's a difference between hard and impossible. This is just hard. You can say Picasso is a better painter than me, and you can say Matisse is a better painter than me, and nobody disagrees. Once you can rank painters like this, you have to ask yourself how you reached these conclusions. What in my work makes it inferior? Then, you can apply the same criteria to the harder problem of Picasso vs. Matisse.
